Munshi Premchand's short story and those innocent years of playing GULLI DANDA. (Food for Thought by Bobby Sing).

BAANKEY KI CRAZY BARAAT - Its basic plot might be absurd but the performances turn it into a fairly enjoyable film that could have been a lot better. (Review By Bobby Sing).

KAUN KITNE PAANI MEIN - What a wasted opportunity to make a fine satire on a crucial subject of water-scarcity. (Review By Bobby Sing).

PHANTOM - Reading an old Indrajal Comics on the actual Phantom is sure going to be much more logical, thrilling & entertaining. (Review By Bobby Sing).

This Friday's One Line Reviews by Bobby Sing for making your weekend plans..

MANJHI - Watch it as a respect towards the spirited man, his true love and the unbelievable task completed single handedly, much important than a well enacted film loaded with many deliberate insertions. (Review By Bobby Sing).

ALL IS WELL - Post a 100 minutes awful show, it tries hard to teach some family values in vain. (Review By Bobby Sing).

GOUR HARI DASTAAN - A must watch depiction of a shocking true story that is sure going to make us feel the shame contributing in the corrupt system. (Review by Bobby Sing).

BROTHERS - Having a miserable first hour, the remake somehow manages to deliver post intermission due to the brothers, their fights and the father well enacted by Jackie Shroff. (Review By Bobby Sing).

ANGREJ (Punjabi) - The immensely lovable performances, ethnic feel, well written dialogues and a fabulous soundtrack makes this familiar love story a worth watching film for sure. (Review By Bobby Sing).

Doordarshan - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

This write-up is like a nostalgic trip down the memory lane when apart from the movie world the only visual entertainment source we had was the Doordarshan. Before the Cable Revolution arrived in India around 1991, every person in a household had his own favourite serial as per their choices and they all used to sit glued to the small screen at their fixed times and week-days. But the best (or sad) part is that the most of the below mentioned serials still remain the pioneer masterpieces in their different genres and that’s why the  Home Video market is rightly bringing them all back in the form of DVDs. So let’s go back in our golden days of Television Entertainment reading all these famous serial titles.

1.      Aur Bhi Gham Hain Zamane Mein (Drama)
(Most of the friends here may not have heard of it but this is the first serial I can recall watching on Doordarshan in the late 70s or the early 80s.)

2.
Air Hostess
(Drama)
3.      Ados Pados (Comic Family Drama)
4.      Apradhi Kaun (Mystery/Detective Serial)
5.   Bharat Ek Khoj (Historical / Mythological) (Available on Home Video)
6.      Buniyaad (Drama)
7.      Byomkesh Bakshi (Detective Serial) (Available on Net but awaited on Home Video)
8.      Barrister Vinod (Crime/Detective Serial)
9.      Bahadur Shah Zafar (Available on Home Video)
10.  Chitrahaar (Weekly presentation of new & old songs)
11. Circus (Drama/Comedy)

12.   Dada Dadi Ki Kahaniyaan (Children/Educative/Fantasy Tales)
13.   Ek Do Teen Chaar (Children Mystery/Detective Serial)
14.   Fauji (Drama) (Available on Home Video)
15.   Flop Show (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
16.   Hum Log (Drama)
17.   Honi Anhoni (Based on Supernatural Stories)
18.   Idhar Udhar (Comedy)
19.   Kachhi Dhoop (Drama) (Available on Home Video)
20.   Kahan Gaye Woh Log (Historical)
21.   Kakaji Kahin (Social-Political Comedy)
22.   Katha Sagar (Drama - Literature) (Available on Home Video)
23.   Karamchand (Detective Serial)
24.   Khandaan (Drama)
25. Kiley Ka Rehasya (Suspense/Horror)
26. Ladoo Singh Taxi Wala (Comedy/Drama)

27.   Moughli (Based on Jungle Book) (Children) (Available on Home Video)
28.   Mahabaharat (Mythological) (Available on Home Video)
29.   Malgudi Days (Comedy – Drama - Literature) (Available on Home Video)
30.   Mirza Ghalib (Poetry – Drama - Historical) (Available on Home Video)
31.   Mr. Yogi (Drama/Comedy)
32.   Mr. & Mrs. (Drama/Comedy)
33.   Mungerilaal Ke Haseen Sapne (Comedy)
34.   Mulla Nasruddin (Naseeruddin) (Comedy)

35.   Nukkad (Comedy/Drama) (Available on Home Video)
36.   Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (Celebrity Interviews)
37.   Rajni (Social Drama)
38.   Ramayan (Mythological) (Available on Home Video)

39.   Saptahiki (Weekly Announcements of Forthcoming programmes)
40.   Surabhi (Variety Programme)
41.   Subah (Drama on Drugs)
42.   Shrikant (Drama/Literature)
43.   Tamas (Historical) (Available on Home Video)
44.   Tenali Rama (Drama/Literature) (Available on Home Video)
45.   The Sword of Tipu Sultan (Historical) (Available on Home Video)
46.   Udaan (Drama) (Available on Home Video)
47.   Ulta Pulta (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
48.   Vikram Aur Betaal (Fantasy Tales) (Available on Home Video)
49.   Wagle Ki Duniya (Comedy)
50.   Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
And there are three worth mentioning masterpieces among the recent serials :
Dekh Bhai Dekh (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
Zabaan Sambhal Ke (Comedy) (Featuring Pankaj Kapoor) (Available on Home Video)
Office Office (Comedy) (Featuring Pankaj Kapoor) (Available on Home Video)
Please let me know if I missed out any famous serial of yours in the list as they all got to be there to make it a complete article in all aspects.

Dear DS
I am not sure about Himalaya Darshan, but DOORDARSHAN has been airing many of the past gems in the recent years too but on its distinctive channels like National Doordarshan Channel, Urdu Channel and others.
So please keep chekcing the telecast schedule published in the daily newspapers to get some exact info.

Salaam Bobby Sir
I am regular reader of your blog and really find it very interesting and entertaining. Sir, the kind of serials which I used to watch and grow up were truly mesmerizing. All the good stuff were there on our very own Door Darshan. How I wish my son would have been enjjoying and at the same time learning a lot from them. Today in the jungle of cable T.V, film or serials especially for children don't find there way.

Thank you for bringing the nostalgia...

Dear Deepak,

Thanks a lot for writing in but please note that since the article was posted in December 2009, there have been more than 600 comments on the same with mention of almost ALL THE REMAINING TITLES, many valuable links and some rare information about our loved serials of that golden era, which might not be there on the net in a collective form.

So if you are really interested then you can easily go through all those comments and discussion now compiled in PDF files (year wise) shared in the links given below the post.

The files can be downloaded with just a click and then accessed as per your convenience to once again feel that nostalgia of those forgotten times.

With a hope that you would love to go back in that golden era with so much info about all those serials to cherish and enjoy!

Cheers!

Hi,

I think the haunting tune of "Kiley Ka Rahesya" is from one of the songs of Pink Floyd.
Let me research ;) more to find which one of their songs.

===============================================
I guess the serials listed here are the ones telecast-ed on DD1 or DD National.
There are many regional language serials that were telecast-ed on regional networks.
For example in Mumbai we had Marathi and Gujarati serials shown on our regional networks.
To mention one such serial is Ek Shunya Shunya a Marathi serial based on Mumbai police crime investigation.
It was made by B.P. Singh the one that now makes CID for Sony TV.
In fact Shivaji Satam as ACP Pradyuman was also the main protagonist of Ek Shunya Shunya as he is now for CID.

===============================================

If DD just tried to digitize its archive and later market them as CDs and DVDs they will be earning lot of revenues. But they are not doing so and hence such good stuff remain only in our memories.

bobbysing
submitted on 21 May 2015

Dear Madhusoodna Rao,
Please do let me know if you find any link betwee the haunting tune of "Kiley Ka Rahesya" and any song of Pink Floyd.
------------------
Yes the serials in the article here are just HINDI serials telecast before 1990 on Doordarshan, not including the regional serials telecast all over India....... keeping it more focused.
------------------
And regarding DD trying to digitize its archive, they did began with serials like BHARAT EK KHOJ but the experiment didnt work out with quite less sales in reality.
So the best option now for them is to open a Youtube Channel for old serials.
But here another HARD TRUTH is that even Doordarshan might not be having fine masters of these serials in their stocks.

Therefore the situation is not too bright for the lovers of all those great serials of the past.
Still we got to stick to our HOPES as always.
Cheers!

Dear Madhusoodana Rao,
The arrangement/beats of the track does make you remind the title song but that haunting composition/tune is what I am still missing.

Dear Shibin,
Unfortunately in India not much documentation work is available to study when it comes to Doordarshan. Still as I can remember it was "AUR BHI GHAM HAIN ZAMANE MEIN" that was aired in the late 70s or early 80s.

Hello Bobysingh Ji .

I have been thinking for long and scratching my head to remember name of serial which used to come on Sundays during late 80's . I remember the plot , In that serial there was a middle-class family man who got a chirag / diya ( lamp ) and whenever he used to rub it without any intention after sometime one person would come to his house with bag full of money and would ask him that what he wants him to do for him. Please let me know the name of this serial if you remember.

Thanks.
