ISLAND CITY (Hindi) - A not to be missed extremely intelligent take on life that puts you on a serious thinking mode like an innovative, experimental, thought provoking book. (Review by Bobby Sing) (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama).

PARCHED (Hindi) - The positive wave continues with a story of 3 strong rural women, but this time especially made for the international/festival audience having many forced cliches. (Review by Bobby Sing).

BANJO - Why we keep going back to the same old subjects and then expect them to be a success taking the viewers as granted? (Review By Bobby Sing).

RAAZ REBOOT - Yet another similar and poorly made project to fool us in the name of horror. (Review By Bobby Sing).

Doordarshan - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

This write-up is like a nostalgic trip down the memory lane when apart from the movie world the only visual entertainment source we had was the Doordarshan. Before the Cable Revolution arrived in India around 1991, every person in a household had his own favourite serial as per their choices and they all used to sit glued to the small screen at their fixed times and week-days. But the best (or sad) part is that the most of the below mentioned serials still remain the pioneer masterpieces in their different genres and that’s why the  Home Video market is rightly bringing them all back in the form of DVDs. So let’s go back in our golden days of Television Entertainment reading all these famous serial titles.

1.      Aur Bhi Gham Hain Zamane Mein (Drama)
(Most of the friends here may not have heard of it but this is the first serial I can recall watching on Doordarshan in the late 70s or the early 80s.)

2.
Air Hostess
(Drama)
3.      Ados Pados (Comic Family Drama)
4.      Apradhi Kaun (Mystery/Detective Serial)
5.   Bharat Ek Khoj (Historical / Mythological) (Available on Home Video)
6.      Buniyaad (Drama)
7.      Byomkesh Bakshi (Detective Serial) (Available on Net but awaited on Home Video)
8.      Barrister Vinod (Crime/Detective Serial)
9.      Bahadur Shah Zafar (Available on Home Video)
10.  Chitrahaar (Weekly presentation of new & old songs)
11. Circus (Drama/Comedy)

12.   Dada Dadi Ki Kahaniyaan (Children/Educative/Fantasy Tales)
13.   Ek Do Teen Chaar (Children Mystery/Detective Serial)
14.   Fauji (Drama) (Available on Home Video)
15.   Flop Show (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
16.   Hum Log (Drama)
17.   Honi Anhoni (Based on Supernatural Stories)
18.   Idhar Udhar (Comedy)
19.   Kachhi Dhoop (Drama) (Available on Home Video)
20.   Kahan Gaye Woh Log (Historical)
21.   Kakaji Kahin (Social-Political Comedy)
22.   Katha Sagar (Drama - Literature) (Available on Home Video)
23.   Karamchand (Detective Serial)
24.   Khandaan (Drama)
25. Kiley Ka Rehasya (Suspense/Horror)
26. Ladoo Singh Taxi Wala (Comedy/Drama)

27.   Moughli (Based on Jungle Book) (Children) (Available on Home Video)
28.   Mahabaharat (Mythological) (Available on Home Video)
29.   Malgudi Days (Comedy – Drama - Literature) (Available on Home Video)
30.   Mirza Ghalib (Poetry – Drama - Historical) (Available on Home Video)
31.   Mr. Yogi (Drama/Comedy)
32.   Mr. & Mrs. (Drama/Comedy)
33.   Mungerilaal Ke Haseen Sapne (Comedy)
34.   Mulla Nasruddin (Naseeruddin) (Comedy)

35.   Nukkad (Comedy/Drama) (Available on Home Video)
36.   Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (Celebrity Interviews)
37.   Rajni (Social Drama)
38.   Ramayan (Mythological) (Available on Home Video)

39.   Saptahiki (Weekly Announcements of Forthcoming programmes)
40.   Surabhi (Variety Programme)
41.   Subah (Drama on Drugs)
42.   Shrikant (Drama/Literature)
43.   Tamas (Historical) (Available on Home Video)
44.   Tenali Rama (Drama/Literature) (Available on Home Video)
45.   The Sword of Tipu Sultan (Historical) (Available on Home Video)
46.   Udaan (Drama) (Available on Home Video)
47.   Ulta Pulta (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
48.   Vikram Aur Betaal (Fantasy Tales) (Available on Home Video)
49.   Wagle Ki Duniya (Comedy)
50.   Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
And there are three worth mentioning masterpieces among the recent serials :
Dekh Bhai Dekh (Comedy) (Available on Home Video)
Zabaan Sambhal Ke (Comedy) (Featuring Pankaj Kapoor) (Available on Home Video)
Office Office (Comedy) (Featuring Pankaj Kapoor) (Available on Home Video)
Please let me know if I missed out any famous serial of yours in the list as they all got to be there to make it a complete article in all aspects.

submitted on 16 July 2014

Dear DS
I am not sure about Himalaya Darshan, but DOORDARSHAN has been airing many of the past gems in the recent years too but on its distinctive channels like National Doordarshan Channel, Urdu Channel and others.
So please keep chekcing the telecast schedule published in the daily newspapers to get some exact info.

Salaam Bobby Sir
I am regular reader of your blog and really find it very interesting and entertaining. Sir, the kind of serials which I used to watch and grow up were truly mesmerizing. All the good stuff were there on our very own Door Darshan. How I wish my son would have been enjjoying and at the same time learning a lot from them. Today in the jungle of cable T.V, film or serials especially for children don't find there way.

Thank you for bringing the nostalgia...

Hi,

I think the haunting tune of "Kiley Ka Rahesya" is from one of the songs of Pink Floyd.
Let me research ;) more to find which one of their songs.

===============================================
I guess the serials listed here are the ones telecast-ed on DD1 or DD National.
There are many regional language serials that were telecast-ed on regional networks.
For example in Mumbai we had Marathi and Gujarati serials shown on our regional networks.
To mention one such serial is Ek Shunya Shunya a Marathi serial based on Mumbai police crime investigation.
It was made by B.P. Singh the one that now makes CID for Sony TV.
In fact Shivaji Satam as ACP Pradyuman was also the main protagonist of Ek Shunya Shunya as he is now for CID.

===============================================

If DD just tried to digitize its archive and later market them as CDs and DVDs they will be earning lot of revenues. But they are not doing so and hence such good stuff remain only in our memories.

bobbysing
submitted on 21 May 2015

Dear Madhusoodna Rao,
Please do let me know if you find any link betwee the haunting tune of "Kiley Ka Rahesya" and any song of Pink Floyd.
------------------
Yes the serials in the article here are just HINDI serials telecast before 1990 on Doordarshan, not including the regional serials telecast all over India....... keeping it more focused.
------------------
And regarding DD trying to digitize its archive, they did began with serials like BHARAT EK KHOJ but the experiment didnt work out with quite less sales in reality.
So the best option now for them is to open a Youtube Channel for old serials.
But here another HARD TRUTH is that even Doordarshan might not be having fine masters of these serials in their stocks.

Therefore the situation is not too bright for the lovers of all those great serials of the past.
Still we got to stick to our HOPES as always.
Cheers!

Hi Nikhil,
The name of this serial was Antariksh (or Brahmand). I was too fond of this series because it talked about science and universe. It used to be aired as a segment in Chhutti Chhutti, but I am pretty sure this was a rerun of a previously made series. I am looking for this serial for years now with no success. Even the amazing title song is not available on youtube. The title song was sung by Suresh Wadekar, and it goes like this,

AAKASH BAHUT UNCHA HAI, AUR DUR BAHUT HAIN TAARE
FIRTE HUE SAINKDO SURAJ, BRAHMAND KE YE BANJAARE

AAKASH BAHUT UNCHA HAI...UNCHA HAI...UNCHA HAI

SADIYO KE BHAWAR BEHTE HAIN, ANGINAT HAIN SAMAY KE TAARE
AUR NEELA SA EK MOTI, KEHTE HAIN ZAMIN HUM SARE, ZAMIN HUN SAARE

AAKASH BAHUT UNCHA HAI...UNCHA HAI...UNCHA HAI

CHHOTI SI BOOND SI DHARTI, SAGAR SE KAHIN GEHRI HAI
AKASH KI GANGA MEIN YE, BAJRE KI TARAH BEHTI HAI

AAKASH BAHUT UNCHA HAI...UNCHA HAI...UNCHA HAI

The first episode starts with a few school kids (one of them was Bhaskar) who were about to do a trip to the Planetarium organised by the school on the day of Solar Eclipse. But the family of one kid didn't allow him to go out because of the superstition. Still, he gets away from home for the school trip. There was a machine at the Planetarium which gave you your weight on different planets (seemed like some kind of magic :D). There was also a model Spaceship in which you can enter and drive, and once you entered it, it seemed like a real spaceship with all the controls and announcements, also it had a big screen on the cockpit. Later when Bhaskar comes home, his grandmother throws a bucket of water on him.

The later episodes were more Science and Invention based. And Professor Narlikar used to come in many of them to explain the science. The episode about the Telescope and its Invention was great.

Please comment if anybody gets any information about this series.

-Prateek

Thanks for sharing your passion for these old dd serials.
But unfortunately these are still not uploaded by any fan on Youtube and only the title song of Subah is available as an audio track.

Moreover the way the archives are given no importance in our country in TV or film industry therefore we don't have much hopes to see these serials anymore in the near future, unless someone personally has some episodes recorded at VHS tapes and cares to upload them on the net.

So HOPE is only what we can have.

Hello. I remember a serial about a big family of 3 sons. One son played by Mohan Bhandari settled abroad. Another setltled in a city in India and the third in a village in India. They all come back ti live together with their parents in a big home in India. All of them have children. The fun that these kids have and the adjustment issues all of them face. I believe the serial was called mile sur mera tumhara. But am not sure now since I cant seem to find its video or reference anywhere. Can you help?

Hello Bobby, I am trying to recall name of a Hindi serial (aired on DD1 I guess) in which Human like robots were shown. Scientists had put feelings in these robots. Basically Artificial Intelligence. One of the Robot was played by girl who offers help to a kid to finish his homework and some such stuff. Could you recall it? If yes, can you share some more information about it?
