Charade (1963) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Suspense)

02 Apr, 2009 | Movies To See Before You Die / Suspense

If you are a Hitchcock fan and love watching his quality thrillers then this is what you must watch as your next. Strangely, the movie is not in any way related to Alfred Hitchcock but it can rightly be called, "A Hitchcock movie never made by Hitchcock" as a fast paced thriller with a highly entertaining climax and impressive performances by the lead pair Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

The story revolves around only a few characters who suspect each other for having a valuable possession. The screenplay and its engrossing sequences keep you guessing every five minutes of the proceedings. The lead couple looks adorable in their small fights and chases. And the film is so intriguing that you will find it tough to stop in between and would like to watch it in one go. Undoubtedly better than many directionless thrillers made in the current times.

In short Charade is one of the best mystery movies I enjoyed with a pinch of comedy and romance too. Interestingly the film was remade in the West as The Truth About Charlie (2002) and as Kokhono Megh (1968) in India in Bengali. Plus it also inspired Bollywood to come with a not so worthy film as Chura Liya Hain Tumne (2000). The Indian music directors were also highly influenced by the theme track of the movie, which was the inspiration behind the haunting theme music and title song of Gumnaam (1965).

But no remake could reach the same level of the Original directed by Stanley Donen. It’s really sad that these kinds of light and entertaining movies are not being made anymore by the current filmmakers as they now remain more interested in emphasizing on the looks and grandeur of a movie than its writing and content. So, if you are a fan of suspense and thriller movies, then make sure Charade is your next watch and have a great time.

Directed By Stanley Donen
Starring : Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn & More
