Rohit Shetty and team is back with the fourth film of their series GOLMAAL AGAIN and this time they present it as a horror-comedy entertainer exactly like Indra Kumar did in his GREAT GRAND MASTI released last year. However where Indra Kumar tried to present it as an erotic horror comedy, Rohit designs it as a clean family comedy based on an otherwise repetitive plot of revenge.

Beginning with the re-union of five young men (Ajay, Arshad, Shreyas, Tusshar and Kunal) having lived their childhood together in a ‘well-maintained’ orphanage, Rohit narrates the basic plot in the first few minutes and then moves on to comedy commencing with an explosive action sequence as his trademark feature. The first half gives you a real good time introducing Tabu and Parineeti Chopra, along with Nana Patekar as a pleasant surprise component incorporated pretty well. The hilarious dialogues work and even long comic sequences do the trick with the entire team enacting superbly, especially Shreyas Talpade in a new funny form and Johny Lever as the ever-dependent veteran. In few words, one gets full return of his money spent (on the raised ticket prices) before the intermission, enjoying the humour presented well by the entire cast ensemble.

Sadly the dip begins in the second half once the vengeance plot takes over with many over the top sequences involving Prakash Raj and Vrajesh Hirjee behaving weirdly. Still the funny moments keep coming in at gaps and that doesn’t put you off completely. However the film would certainly have been a thoroughly entertaining venture if its final hour was dealt differently stressing more upon the humour quotient.

Unlike its earlier parts, the latest venture keeps focusing on Ajay Devgn in particular which actually hampers the original spirit of the franchise unexpectedly. The other four characters are there but not in their elements as seen and enjoyed in the rest of the films (especially Arshad Warsi). Tabu looks great and enacts differently in a much carefree manner but she along with Parineeti actually don’t get much to do in the film except just standing in the large group of so many talented artists. Parineeti looks fine and adds a young feel to the project too in her individual scenes and songs. But the remarks on her age difference with Ajay Devgn sound both bizarre as well as hilarious made in a confused manner.

In the rest of the cast, Sanjay Mishra brings the house down with his well-written lines, Neil Nitin Mukesh is just there as the villain and Mukesh Tiwari, Sachin Khedekar and Murli Sharma are fine playing their small given characters.

With a typical loud background score and colourful sets GOLMAAL AGAIN begins with an upbeat title song bringing in the required energy and then has two re-used tracks of old hit films (following the current blind trend) along with “Hum Nahin Sudherenge” having a melody more apt for a slow love ballad.

In general terms, though comedy at times remains subjective with big differences of opinion (depending upon the humour one enjoys in his close friends circle), this latest offering from Rohit has all the ingredients to keep you hooked and entertained with a much better and engaging first half.

Personally I thoroughly enjoyed the film before intermission but would have loved it a lot more, had the same excellence been there in its second half too. Overall, a more than satisfactory watch as a rare amalgamation of horror and comedy, this new GOLMAAL film should ideally win the Diwali box office battle of 2017.

(But since multiplexes yet again raised the ticket prices for this Diwali release, without following any balanced policy of lowering the same for comparatively smaller films, therefore a star stands deducted from its ratings as per BTC’s individual continuous revolt against the uncontrolled system.)

Rohit Shetty is back after the debacle of a biggie (DILWALE) and he is back with the fourth film of his successful GOLMAAL series as GOLMAAL AGAIN, which yet again works with a thoroughly enjoyable first half and an average second.

However this would certainly have been a much more enjoyable horror-comedy if Rohit and his writers had maintained the humour quotient in its final hour too keeping it a little short. The film gives you a good time in the theater till the intermission but then comes up with some repetitive, seen before kind of sequences in reference to the confession of a murderer and the vengeance plot. Its like they couldn’t think of anything else and thus continued with the same routine stuff adding the funny moments in between.

Overall, GOLMAAL AGAIN might not be an outstanding laugh riot, but it’s a decent entertainer for sure with many hilarious scenes, dialogues and enjoyable performances.

Dear MB,
Thanks a lot for being a regular reader and for your kind words of appreciation.
But regarding your comment, would humbly like to say that its not always necessary that our views match for a movie in a set routine.

Besides I have seen that such disagreements only happen when a COMEDY film is there instead of anything else. And as mentioned in the detailed review 'Enjoying a Comedy' will always remain subjective dependent upon what kind of humour a person enjoys and easily laughs at in his friend circle.

So may be this time it doesnt match but its perfectly fine as we all have our own choices and preference in terms of comedy.
For instance where JUDWAA 2 didnt work for me, this mostly did getting the 3 stars........whereas both the films are now declared HIT at the boxoffice.

Good day Bobby Singh All the best for the festival season and new year. I was disappointed to see Golmaal Again win best picture for Zee Awards. I had to come and see your review again to see if i misjudged it. Do you really believe that this movie deserve it or is it that, awards are being given gratiuosly left, right and centre undeservedly whilst good movies are being ignored because they are not commercially as successful? Regarding the movie, it certainly didnt deserve any award at all. It was just a good one time watch movie with its enjoyable moments as well as many major drawbacks.
But why to worry about Awards......they are no longer given to the deserving candidate here as we all know.
