Director James Wan has achieved a sort of mastery in genres of horror and dark thrillers in the last decade since SAW released in 2004. And the fact is clearly visible in his INSIDIOUS as the film does make you feel both the tension & the fear as expected from a well made horror movie by a renowned director. In fact the major highlight of Wan's present horror film is that despite having the same old scary tricks played along with the screeching musical score & shocking visuals, the director still manages to give you something fresh in his execution and provides the much required scary entertainment to a large extent as desired. And that’s precisely the reason why INSIDIOUS finds a place in this must watch movie list for its own distinctive merits & novelty.
The film creates the tension in the first few minutes only and then keeps on adding to its haunting impact without relying on any blood, sex or heavy computer graphics with some gruesome content (which is sure a rare thing for a compelling horror film). Though for few friends it might not turn out to be that scary but frankly I was surely taken back by few shocking insertions at some crucial points of the film, like when the camera points towards the roof above the victim child's bed, the red face visible in the back and many more. Moreover here we have an engaging story too in the film with a fresh theme which keeps you hooked on to its suffering characters till the climax. The well written script is finely executed and perfectly shot with an amazing cinematography which immensely adds to its overall impact on the viewers ready to enjoy the frightening moments and feel the thrill.
In short, after so many similar, seen before kind of attempts being made regularly in the recent times, INSIDIOUS comes like a fresh breeze in the horror genre despite having the same old haunted house, victim child, teasing spirits and scary sound effects. So once again its the director James Wan's own personal twist in the presentation, which serves as the winner here in the difficult genre of horror films. Hence if you love to get spooked occasionally and like to feel the scare watching those 'at your face' shocking moments on the screen placed carefully then do watch INSIDIOUS as a must and have a good time.
