Invictus (2009) (Movies To See Before You Die - Biographical)

24 Dec, 2012 | Movies To See Before You Die / Biographical

Invictus (which in Latin means unconquerable or undefeated) is actor-director Clint Eastwood’s another must watch masterstroke based on the inspiring true incidents of South Africa. Its about how the legendary Nelson Mandela successfully reinstated the spirit of one nation and togetherness in the people of his country through a reputed sports event of Rugby. In February 1990, Nelson Mandela got released after 27 years of imprisonment and then was elected President of South Africa in 1994. But even being at the highest post, he very well knew that his nation still remained divided both on financial and racial grounds due to the old South African political system where only whites had political rights or power and the rest were treated as a lower class all over.

Now to change the unfortunate scenario, Mandela called Francois Pienaar, the captain of National Rugby Team, Springboks to help him reach his goal and together they achieved the difficult task with patience, empathy and love. It was the time of Rugby World Cup in 1995 and the film is an account of all those insightful incidents which lead to the grand win bringing every citizen of the country together as one. Based on John Carlin’s novel, it also introduces the viewer to the real Nelson Mandela having an exceptionally blessed personality of a born leader with a calm & cool persona preaching forgiveness and love for every fellow being of the world.

INVICTUS is not only an entertaining and inspiring film on sports and sportsman spirit but its also a must watch for two splendid, realistic performances by Morgan Freeman as Mandela and Matt Damon as Pienaar, the Captain of the team. Their mutual bonding & understanding is displayed brilliantly by Eastwood through his talented actors. And the fact got its due recognition when both the lead actors were rightly awarded the reputed nomination in the category of Best Performance in a Leading Role and Best Performance in a Supporting Role respectively in the Academy Awards of 2010.

So if you wish to know more about Nelson Mandela and how he successfully managed to unite his people of South Africa through Rugby then do watch INVICTUS as it reportedly is also an almost accurate depiction of the actual events of that time. The film is neither too preachy nor patriotic as it may seem from the above description here. But on the contrary it is a simple lovable film which has a beautiful message to give and lot of emotional moments where you may excitingly jump to cheer for the characters loudly, like the spectators sitting in the stadium. In all, a highly recommended flick for everyone, especially the sports enthusiastic youngsters, as an important lesson on team work and sportsman spirit.
