“Jab We Met” came in the year 2007 and conquered hearts all over with its impressive content and execution. Kareena Kapoor as the bubbly Punjabi girl was simply loved by everyone unanimously and Shahid Kapoor as the mature man was appreciated all over. The film was an instant success at the box office also due to its superb music and melodious songs, which are still lovingly played to pump up the party spirits even today.
Reportedly this time the success of the film reached the other part of the world too and the western film-makers decided to make a similar kind of film for their own audiences. Suiting their requirement the film was named “LEAP YEAR’ - reminding an old folklore tradition in which no proposal by a lady gets denied in a Leap Year.
The IMDB page of the film clearly says that “LEAP YEAR” is an inspired version of “JAB WE MET” and the web is also full of references and articles saying the same. But still somehow I couldn’t find any official declaration or collaboration kind of news written anywhere on the Official Sites related to any of the movies or their production houses.
Anyhow for Bollywood and our Indian Film-makers it’s no doubt and encouraging news which should ideally infuse new spirits in our new age directors and producers.
But on a personal note, I consider it as a very lucky or even funny kind of connection since “JAB WE MET” itself had glimpses of many other movies such as “A Walk In The Clouds” (1995) and “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge” (1995). In other words the film had a storyline which had nothing new but it was the execution by its director Imitiaz Ali and its impressive performances, which actually did the trick.
Yet if the west gets inspired from any of our movies and its execution, then its indeed a welcome change to be celebrated by all.
