Yash Chopra’s "Kala Patthar" is a well made intense thriller having few explosive and worth watching sequences between Amitabh Bachchan & Shatrughan Sinha. Shashi Kapoor as the cool manager also impresses in this off beat masterpiece made in 1979.

Regarding its inspirational sources, the Amitabh part of the story is quite inspired from “Lord Jim” (1965), which was also based on the novel with the same name.

The mine disaster of water flowing into the tunnels was inspired by a real life incident which actually took place in 1975 at “Chasnala” in Bihar now Jharkand (India). And it is also very similar to the mine flooding conspiracy shown in “Gold” (1974).
