Life Is Beautiful (1997) (Italy) - (Movies To See Before You Die - World Cinema/Drama)

As suggested by its title, the movie has a simple but valuable message to give. It says that “Life is a Game”, play it – enjoy it, because one day the game is sure going to end. Appreciated by both critics and movie lovers all over the world, the movie is capable of winning hearts with its sensitive approach, irrespective of any language barrier.

It starts with a love story and has lighter moments of fun in the first half. Later the film gets more serious as it enters the War Zone. The hero and his son are taken to a Concentration Camp in which he has to face all the hardships of a prisoner. But his son doesn’t take the surroundings as a prison, since according to his father, this is all a game they are playing and the winning prize is a Tank. So each event in the prison is explained to the child from a game’s point of view. That is a real insight to experience and a brave attempt by the actor-director Roberto Benigni.

All explanations given to the child are written beautifully which justify each development in a new way. As you go through the movie you feel that it has been rightly titled “Life is Beautiful”. Watch it if you take your life as a gift from the almighty. And if possible do remember the message of this masterpiece, which says “Life is a Game”. Play it well.

Directed By Roberto Benigni (Also in the lead role)
