Om Shanti Om (2007) & its inspirations

30 Dec, 2007 | Inspired Movies (Alphabetical) / O

“Om Shanti Om” is a pure mass entertainer from Farah Khan, with all the right ingredients of a Mega Blockbuster. Though it has a long list of inspirations and similar themes but here Farah rightly acknowledges the major influence to the movie by featuring the showman Subhash Ghai and Rishi Kapoor in the opening sequence itself.

“Om Shanti Om” is more or less based on the same theme of “Karz” (1980) which was itself inspired from "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud” (1975). The basic storyline and the climax sequence with a haunting song, is all quite similar to the Ghai’s 1980 hit.

Farah also pays her tribute to the Late Manmohan Desai kind of entertaining cinema by bringing 31 stars together in a song. This was originally done by Manmohan Desai in his Amitabh Bachhan starrer movie "Naseeb" (1981) and the song was "John Johny Janardan”. In this song Amitabh plays the role of a hotel waiter, singing & serving all the stars of Bollywood in a party.

I really admire, the director’s courage to show respect towards her inspirations in the film itself. Well done Shahrukh & Farah. Keep it up!.

Other Inspirations :
The Climax also reminds us of a similar one in Bimal Roy's "Madhumati" (1958), where also the heroine who was dead, comes back as a spirit and takes her revenge.

The Akshay Kumar fight sequence at the Awards Function also borrows heavily from a similar sequence in a foreign flick.
