SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHENGA - Made with noble intentions on a plot, too thin to be adapted for a feature film. (Review By Bobby Sing)

From the last decade, inflation and the constantly increasing cost of living is a problem faced by every single person in the lower and middle income group of our society. The common man has been fighting with this Price Demon from years now and the subject has been adapted in many good films in the past like KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, DO DOONI CHAAR, PHAS GAYA RE OBAMA and more.
As the title suggests, SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHENGA also deals with this relevant issue of our present society only, directed by the debutant Anshul Sharma with many real life characters and locations reminding you of your own Gali-Mohallas right away. It begins with a long but interesting introduction of its likable cast wherein the members of a middle class family are fighting hard to manage with the rising prices and looking for a long lasting solution for the same. The whole first half remains unmoving as nothing substantial happens in it as far as the storyline is concerned. And the movie actually comes to its major plot supporting a good intentioned satire only post the intermission.
Once again, the romantic angle seems to be forced in deliberately and the soundtrack including the background score remains uninteresting except the “Aaun De” track played along the end credits. However the focus kept on lovable minute details by the director like the look of the local beauty parlor operational within the residence; the realistic general store shop in the lane run by a calculative owner and the styling of typical government officers investigating the loan applicants, keeps the viewer’s interest alive and one just feels like having seen an average film made on a concerning topic in the end. On the other hand, the impressive acts by Sanjay Mishra, Pragati Pandey, Sitaram Panchal and Zakir Hussain don’t let you write off the film completely though the rest strictly remain ok including Vishwa Mohan Badola, Ranjan Chhabra and Disha.
So in totality SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHENGA remains an honest effort made with some noble intentions which you will surely enjoy while watching it on your TV sets. But as a full length feature film released in the theaters it actually lacks the content and depth to satisfy the viewer in return of the price spent on its expensive multiplex ticket. In other words, the subject matter of the film is just perfect for a good episode of a social comedy T.V. serial and that’s it. With a running time of less than 2 hours it doesn’t satisfy you as a movie experience really and one simply feels like having served much less than what it costs as it ends.
On the contrary, yes we do need films with meaningful subjects touching the burning issues of our society spreading more awareness among the viewers. Yet the storyline of such films should be selected carefully as their plot needs to be solid enough fulfilling the essential requirements of a major big screen venture. Therefore, in absence of any such plot in SJSM, you can easily give it a miss in the theaters and wait for its channel telecast or home video release in the next few weeks.
