TERAA SURROOR - A film made in a 'Zid' with an interesting plot that gets ruined by almost everything except the music. (Review and an open letter to Himesh Reshammiya by Bobby Sing)

It’s said that a man is known by the company he keeps, that can either be of real friends-cum-guides or fake appreciators praising everything he does keeping in mind their own individual interests & plans. Thankfully Sonu Nigam was blessed with some thoughtful real friends who could give him the right advice at the right time and the man stopped trying to forcibly be an actor, saving himself from any further embarrassment post a few pathetic ventures released around 2002-04.
However it seems Himesh Reshammiya has still not got any real, honest friends around him as a part of the team, since he is continuing committing the same mistake with an arrogant over-confidence despite reading & witnessing the wide unfavourable response both from the critics as well as the viewers for his every new film released as a solo hero.
Considering it as a kind of celebration, the fun lovers become so excited to see his film calling it as the latest trash and the social network websites come up with enough sarcastic comments, jokes and memes to describe the questionable acting passion of Himesh, posing as a six-pack hero performing graphical action stunts and romancing beautiful girls on screen fulfilling a personal hidden ambition.
In other words, Himesh and his film soon becomes the talk of the town the moment its first look gets released and people begin making fun of it as if they have been provided a new interesting subject to crack some silly jokes on for the next month or so. The scenario is immensely enjoyable, if you choose to become a part of the crowd ignoring the brilliant success of the musical man in the recent past. And no doubt, his films too have always been the typical, vaguely conceived, below average, unbearable projects solely focusing on the hero alone, without caring about any sensible writing or logical story progression, including the latest TERAA SUROOR providing enough material for many fresh enjoyable jokes or comments.
So joining them all, I can also go on writing a comical review with many funny references from the film following the same crowd-mentality taking the easy route. But if I stop for a while and think about the name – Himesh Reshammiya, as a creator of numerous hit songs and hugely successful film soundtracks in the past, then it becomes extremely difficult or rather painful to make fun of him yet again for his latest mistake made.
It becomes extremely difficult, since here we are not talking about any actor or director, who has been given the chance as he or she luckily belongs to any influential filmy family, without having any creative abilities, talent or proven track record of his own (or any spiritual baba venturing into films). But here it’s all about a self-made man who has actually reached this status with his exceptional gifted talent, proven abilities, years long struggle and extreme hard-work progressing with every single film in the past decades.
Still, if I have to review the project keeping aside this distinctive viewpoint, then for me TERAA SURROOR is yet another project of Himesh made in a ‘Zid’ to prove himself as an actor, once again backfiring as the earlier attempts.
It has a few merits like a fine cinematography, an upbeat soundtrack (as expected) and a grand look which might have made possible to recover the entire cost even before the release by selling all kinds of rights as reported in the trade circles. But frankly this is not a film we would love to watch, featuring a lead couple with the same blank face expression right till the end and many silly, unacceptable insertions like a ‘Desi Katta (Local Pistol)’ being taken along to Ireland for using it in a ‘Purab Aur Pachhim’ kind of sequence, a jail break made so easy as if it was situated in a remote village and the whole Indian government & its ambassadors working to save the girlfriend of an ‘officially appointed’ assassin considering it a matter of national security. Moreover TERAA SURROOR is also a film which proves that many reputed names of our industry in reality have to do such projects to earn some quick money too. And the list includes Naseeruddin Shah, Shekhar Kapoor, Kabir Bedi and the lesser known Shernaz Patel, Monica Dogra and Farah Karimae (perfectly realizing the fact that the film is not going to help in any way in their respective careers).
In short, these are not the kind of projects Himesh Reshammiya is born for and acting is not the stream he has been sent on earth for sure. Himesh is here for making music and he should strictly stick to that for his own self-development and we the fans of Hindi film music to be precise.
Putting it differently, the lovers of Hindi cinema all over the world are basically mad about its music and we just adore watching some great melodious songs being played on the bigger screen with entertaining lyrics, arrangements and composition. Besides, at present when the Hindi film industry is struggling real hard in finding that right kind of music to win over the keen listeners, Himesh Reshammiya is one of those very few names who can confidently deliver the same without any slightest of doubt, whatsoever. A big valid reason, why we don’t wish to see the talent being wasted in proving something which is not really there as projected?
So as an honest & sincere suggestion from a fan,
if acting was your hidden ambition since long, then you have been there, done that and tried all. Now its time to get back to what you are best at!
Get back to making music Himesh, as Hindi film music needs you desperately.
Get back behind your keyboards, spend more time on the harmonium and give us the melodies we are looking for since long.
Mentioning a technical point, you are one of those few intelligent composers of the present times who actually knows how to make a song sound a lot better with only a few instruments playing (without filling it with so many unnecessary tracks just for the sake of it). You know how silence actually makes a song beautiful and you know how a melody needs to be treated with a well suited ‘minimal’ arrangement.
So for god sake, stop following this egoistic passion of yours and get back to work.
The world is already full of dislocated, directionless people who are not doing the work they were born for. Here painters are studying engineering, poets are into medicine, singers are selling shoes and talented salesmen are doing news anchoring adding to the big mess.
Fortunately, you are blessed with the opportunity of making a living from the work you love and can do the best. But you somehow lost the path and began trying in the acting field, probably to become a much bigger star than you already are.
Okay, no issues……. as now it’s all done and still enough time left to forget the past and get back to build the future.
However in case you desperately wish to make films, then please do so by giving chance to new budding talent and become a God sent Godfather for youngsters in the industry, following the footsteps of your mentor Salman Khan. Make movies, produce movies but forget about featuring in them as a lead hero. Let the people born for acting do the acting honours and you get back to the work you are best at.
Here I would like to give a much recent, pleasantly shocking example from Punjabi Cinema where a widely appreciated meaningful film ARDAAS has been co-produced by none other than the famous & ‘much criticized’ rapper Badshah (also active in Bollywood), and he neither has any song nor any cameo appearance in the film declaring his producer status. Exactly the way things should be done by the already established artists.
Summing up, hope the message reaches its right destination and we soon get to hear some fabulous kicking soundtracks from the man who can surely do it much better than many currently in the business.
Long love Indian Film Music Makers and Indian Cinema with HIS BLESSINGS.

Recently I saw Anu mallik won Zee cine award for best music and I headed his short speech where he said after composing music in 300 movies he was forced to go and beg for work to people....this is our industry and this is our nation... Similar comments came from melody King Kumar sanu in some of his recent interviews. And even sonu was seen commenting similar thing in a joking manner... So all of them stocked to there main profession and some day silently thrown out of industry with no work.... A gifted artist never has expiry date.... But it\'s our masses and our ugly industry who makes them die before they actually want...
So in such short and unexpected life time if an artist wants to explore different roles and try to survive for a longer time then it\'s absolutely fine.. I would just suggest HR to keep giving good music for others movies at the same time and contribute his primary duty and then he is free to do whatever he likes.... But we definitely would love to get 2-3 films a year with music like Prem Ratan and Bajrangi....

I have already given the answer or solution to this in the last paragraphs of the review.
That if you have got cinema in you then make movies, produce movies, earn money by giving more deserving one the chance. But featuring in them as a HERO is neither needed nor justified because you just have got the finance and power.

Perfect example of this is in the last lines of the review with the name of BADSHAH becoming a silent producer of a fine Punjabi film without even featuring in it.

Cheers!

MUSTAFA RAJA

good write up,
but i feel that himesh has a particular selected class of audience whom he is sure of who will see the movie and might like as well as proved in his last few films(seems yo yo was heavily inspired from HR in there last film together)
so people who start cracking jokes as soon as the trailer launched are the most jobless people in the world who if dont like HR or never watch his movies n still got a lot of time to talk about him n his movies n joke. if something is not ones cup of tea,the why they bothered to even talk, think, care or joke of that topic, person or movie this proves there own joblesness.

untill and unless tseries has faith in him,and bhushan is making some buks out of this...he has got full freedom of acting, singing, composing in his own films....
one must see his dedication as he has groomed himself from what he was 15yrs back.worked hard o his body, let him do movies untill he himself realizes to quite or not....

Thanks for the praises and sharing your views Mustafa.
But I will like him to do what he is best at taking his clear lessons from SONU NIGAM.

And regarding making money, its always million times better to make money by giving great songs to the nation, that can be remembered and cherished for many decades to come, instead of making it through some crappy, unnecessary movies just because of a personal ZID.........!

Cheers!
