The Hurricane (1999) (Movies To See Before You Die - Biographical)

18 Dec, 2012 | Movies To See Before You Die / Biographical

This is one of those shocking movies, enlightening us about a real life story which is hard to believe, shattering all our beliefs of ‘Justice’ prevailing in this world. It’s about Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, an African-American boxer who was wrongly accused and imprisoned for triple murder, resulting in a conviction of three natural life terms. His celebrity status was not able to help him out and neither was his autobiography written to prove his innocence, which was published to get read by people living their free lives in the outer world.

Fortunately Carter got some positive light in his dark cell when the book reached the hands of an African-American boy and his Canadian mentors who after going through it got convinced of Carter’s innocence and began making efforts for his release. However, in their sincere efforts towards this noble cause they all learned that the fight was actually against a whole system or establishment of Racial Discrimination which was not interested in serving the much deserved justice to such victims purposefully.

No, the film is not about boxing or anything related with the sports. But its actually about the ‘Racial Hatred’ seen and practiced in different parts of the world in various ways, even today. It’s about an innocent victim of this shameful discrimination who later gets rescued by the pure love of few completely unrelated people and thus deserves to be seen for this divine human touch spreading the positive vibes. Denzel Washington superbly plays the role of ‘Hurricane’ portraying his emotional, shocking and spiritual journey suffering for a crime which he had not committed. And for his convincing portrayal of a racial victim, he rightly got an OSCAR nomination of Best Actor in a Leading Role too.

HURRICANE is also an important film which needs to be shown to the young minds because it strongly gives them the message that where a few in this world can feel a great amount of hatred for the other colour or race, there are many who feel the same amount of love for them as their own brothers and sisters coming from the one source of life. And the fact gets beautifully expressed in the words of Carter himself when he says,
“Hate got me in here. But love's gonna bust me out."
A must watch film as a means to understand LIFE in a better way.

Directed by Norman Jewison
Starring : Denzel Washington, Vicellous Reon Shannon and Deborah Kara Unger
