The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama)

05 Dec, 2008 | Movies To See Before You Die / Drama

Surprisingly it is one of the most appreciated movies all over the world, with love and emotions as its basic theme, but there is no female character in the movie. Quite unimaginable, but it’s true. The movie teaches you how to feel for others, how to keep on living in the toughest situations, how to love your life with all its sad moments and still….. it has no female character in the script. Directed by Frank Darabont (who later also gave us another masterpiece “The Green Mile”), this is a remarkable film with a brilliant script and performances.

It’s about a prison, its inmates, their lives and their small joys of solitude. The story revolves around Andy, a banker by profession, who has to spend around 20 years in the jail for a crime which he had not committed. And it’s the story of Red, who is his fellow senior prisoner, and can get you anything you want with his sources within the jail. Morgan Freeman as Red is at his best and he simply wins your heart with that innocent smile of his.

The life in the cell, its limitations and its hardships are shown very impressively in the movie along with a well executed climax explaining the meaning of freedom in life. A true masterpiece, which you will find in the Most Favourite List of every cinema lover around the globe. If you haven’t seen it yet then your passion of cinema remains incomplete.

It is a very good piece of cinema but I dont think that it deserves 9.2 on imdb. Movie is sometimes slow and lengthy.

Otherwise, its a good movie with a very nice subject matter and an outstanding script. But it doesnt deserve 9.2. What do you think about it?

Hi Vinayak,

As I see it, there are two ways of seeing movies, first the technical aspect of waching it and second the way it can influence your own life and thinking patterns. So all the movies can be given two kind of rating according to this. Therefore its possible that you individually may find a particular movie - just Ok as per the movie, but as a life teaching lesson its might turn out to be just terrific.

So, simply try to see the movies in these two ways....For instance in India, movies of Hrishikesh Mukherjee are the simplest in terms of cinematice achievements made in them......but as per the lessons of life in them they are above many other bigger HITS and near perfectly canned movies made till date.

Cheers!

Hi Nihin,
This was written in the very start of my journey of writing about cinema. So it really needs to be given a re-writing, which I have in my mind too.
So the moment I write it again I will surely add this important aspect of the movie in it positively.
Thanks for reminding me brother.
Cheers!
