When Meenakshi Sheshadri didn't get even a single award for her remarkable performance in DAMINI (1993). (Did You Know - 60)

Meenakhsi Sheshadri - Damini Act

Watching DAMINI on a TV channel recently, I once again felt the pain and agony experienced by its lead character, flawlessly played by Meenakshi Shehshadri and fondly remembered how her performance won every single heart both in the masses as well as the classes in 1993 (the year of its release), unanimously.
A prominent name in Hindi films, unfortunately the talented actress graced the Industry for just a few years more than a decade from 1983 to the mid 90s. And perhaps DAMINI was the reason why she left the world of films suddenly, after such a milestone performance in this path breaking film made on a burning social issue.
Recalling those exciting times of early 90s when cable TV had just entered in our country, DAMINI instantly became the talk of the town all over due to two main reasons. First being the perfect performance of Meenakshi along with the superb direction of Raj Kumar Santoshi and second for the powerful trendsetting act by the tough Sunny Deol with his ‘Dhai Kilo Ka Haath’ shown to the cunning lawyer Amrish Puri. In fact both his ‘Dhai Kilo Ka Haath’ and ‘Tareekh Par Tareekh’ dialogue is still used as a spoof in films, serials and plays, even after two decades.
However, it was really sad that where director Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol did get their due awards respectively, there Meenakshi Sheshadri didn’t get even a single award for her fabulous performance in the film quite strangely.
On a personal note, I was aware that FILMFARE awards had earlier also played biased even with films such as MUGHAL-E-AZAM and PAKEEZAH. But I actually lost all my faith in these award ceremonies (never to be regained back) and truly experienced the pain personally when Meenakshi didn’t get what she truly deserved in that year for her immensely touching DAMINI act. And it is said that actually it was this ‘Gross Ignorance’ to her performance by the industry as well as by the National Awards only, which eventually led to her sudden exit from Hindi films forever (in all possibilities).
Anyway whatever be the truth, the fact remains that the lady must have been left completely heartbroken undoubtedly after such unexplainable denials, more so because a true artist does feel the pain a lot more than the other fellow beings, certainly.
(Still for friends who wish to know who actually got the award in that year for their best performances. Juhi Chawla got the FILMFARE for HUM HAIN RAHI PYAR KE & Dimple Kapadia was awarded the National Award for RUDAALI.)

In the eyes of the general 'male' audience, SUNNY DEOL overshadowed everyone in the film. Meenaksh was 2nd to him as per many. That is the impression I get from discussions on the net and the comments under the youtube videos of those famous scenes from the film.
As much as I agree with this article, I would not give so much importance to awards. Meenakshi was denied, its true. But atleast she has this strong role that she will remembered for forever, when you see the kinds of roles her contemporaries and she herself were getting in the 80s, except Sridevi and Rekha.
Dimple deserved that award for 'Rudaali'. not sure why that insinuation in the last line like she didn't.
Juhi herself never got these kind of characters. She did some good roles in films post her marriage but not sure she has received any filmfares after 1993. so, I won't bemoan her win. 2 films I will mention,
1.3 deewarein - on many places on the web, including this site, this film is made to look like a knock off of 'Shawshank Redemption' ( its not). Juhi got acclaim but was nominated only for 'best supporting actress' for the film. who was the actual female lead of the film, I wonder.
2. My brother Nikhil - probably a forgotten film. one of the realistic films post 2000 in hindi. do you remember it? and Juhi in it?

Hi,
Sunny was actually there to take over everyone in the film. It was written that way but Meenakshi in the film was class apart.
Awards are not important but if denial of awards discourage an artist like Meenakshi from continuing working then they do a lot of harm to the art-form instead of making contribution of any manner.

Yes as I felt Dimple didnt deserve the award in comparison as it does matter who else is there in the nominations when the awards are announced. Exactly like the case of Mughal-e-Azam and Beimaan. Unfortunately there was no PRAN here at the time of Damini.

Juhi was very likable in that era and later too. She did some superfine films but I never found her as the one who should be given an award ahead of the other nominations.

3 deewarein was not a knock off of 'Shawshank Redemption'. It was one of the inspiration of the director. Kindly read the BTC article on it again if possible.

My brother Nikhil is not any forgotten film. It was a very good film for sure but lacked at many points so I do not rate it as an exceptional watch
It came before 2007 otherwise its review would have been there at BTC. At that time I had given 3 or 3.5 star rating while writing for a different portal.

Cheers!
