There have been five movies till date in the Jurassic series and the technology or the VFX have gone through a major transformation in the past two decades bringing in a world of change. However, the thrills or goose bumps we felt witnessing the first film in the series directed by Steven Spielberg (in the single screen theaters in 1993) were never felt again in the same quantity and measure in all the subsequent films.
Ironically the fact remains intact in the latest JURASSIC WORLD: Fallen Kingdom too, which no doubt happens to be outstanding in terms of visuals and graphical representations, but struggles to deliver anything exceptional, new or amazing as content, repeating many similar, seen before sequences using an ages old formula.
Directed by J.A. Bayona, it has a worth praising first half revolving around an alarming situation wherein the dinosaurs are in danger due to an erupting volcano in their region. The dilemma before the administration is whether to save them for becoming extinct again or let them go as decided by the mother-nature itself. The film begins on this intense note and then offers an exciting hour introducing the team deciding to save the maximum species risking their own lives. The fact pace action in this particular part of the film keeps you hooked and the visuals never let you blink or check the phone to be honest. Besides the last sight of a dinosaur left behind on the island getting lost in the burning flames, makes you feel the emotion getting involved in the film.
Unfortunately nothing remains the same once the story moves back to the city, with the creatures brutally caged and presented in an auction by a greedy rich man, strongly reminding you of films like KING KONG or TARZAN having a similar story progression. This final hour of the film seriously hampers the momentum built by the initial part and all you get to see is the same repetitive kind of characters, situations and killings lacking any novelty as usual.
In short, JURASSIC WORLD: Fallen Kingdom turns out to be a partially exciting adventure ride that begins exceptionally well but doesn’t end with the same excitement fulfilling the expectations raised. It has an interesting premise and an enjoyable cinematography/VFX too resulting in an above average film. But it certainly would have been an entirely different experience, had they kept the focus entirely on the rescuing expedition of the species, saving them from the sudden destruction on the island brought upon by the active volcano.
So you can surely go for it with the kids enjoying the big screen experience, but if only the tickets don’t cost a bomb, may be on the special discount days or buying through an online scheme.
