Dilp Kumar with his Mogoose - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

There are many famous Hindi movies (which you may easily recall) having a specific role given to a special animal friend of their lead Hero. And we can easily remember films such as “Haathi Mere Saathi”, “Teri Meharbaniyan”, “Mard”, “Coolie”, “Maine Pyar Kiya”, “Parivaar” and many more.
In all these movies, we have seen various animal friends of our Heroes ranging from a Dog, Horse, Elephant, Pigeon, Parrot, Monkey, Mouse and even Eagle. But in the Black & White film “KOHINOOR” released in 1960, the veteran DILIP KUMAR had a very strange, shocking and weird kind of animal friend who was a MONGOOSE (known as Nevala in Hindi). And I really found it both novel as well as strange when I saw Dilip Kumar making his entry in the film along with his MONGOOSE on his shoulders tied from the neck with a string.

If you can’t believe this, then just have a look at the pictures here to feel the weird kind of scene. More interestingly, later in the film, the MONGOOSE also saves his master’s life by killing a snake which is sent to bite Dilip Kumar. But nevertheless it was indeed a brave and interesting choice made by the director S. U. Sunny in a period film.

(The film has Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari in the lead along with Jeevan as the Villain.)
