One of the best Space adventure movies, APOLLO 13 is based on the real life events when NASA sent out its three best people to the Moon for a lunar mission in 1971 and a tragedy got averted through a collective effort of the brave astronauts and the scientists together.
The shuttle got successfully launched in the space but an unexpected fault suddenly caused an explosion in the oxygen tanks and the moon-landing had to be called off immediately. The expedition then turned into a life threatening struggle to bring the astronauts back to earth and director Ron Howard brilliantly dramatizes it all in his film featuring Tom Hanks, Kevin Vacon, Bill Paxtan, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris in the lead.
Its thoughtfully written, taut script is adapted from the book ‘Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13’ penned by astronauts Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger. And the film has been applauded as a technically accurate attempt made after long training sessions taken by the lead cast. A powerful story in itself, APOLLO 13 can also be easily quoted as a scary, thrilling, nail-biting, roller-coaster ride that repeatedly brings you on to the edge of your seats feeling the fear of the worst.
A spellbinding real depiction with outstanding performances by all (especially the three lead men), APOLLO 13 gives you a first-hand kind of experience travelling to the space and one of its most compelling sequences is when they get to see the surface of moon from their aircraft but are unable to land as per their mission due to the technical faults.
The film was rated as #12 in the most inspirational movies list by the American Film Institute, in 2006. And the Academy Awards nominated it in their 9 major categories in 1996 including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Writing (Screenplay based on a published material), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Effects (Visual Effects) and Best Music (Original Dramatic Score). The film won two Oscars among the 9 in the Best Sound and Best Editing category very deservingly.
