BEHEN HOGI TERI - Just manages to be an above average one time watch, but could have been much better & entertaining. (Review By Bobby Sing)

Beginning with its strong merits, there was a lot of potential in this project with a near-perfect real life settings, charming local flavor of Lucknow, the sweet & sour relationships with the neighbors, small time fights within the families, the local old-age goons and all immensely relatable characters apart from an interestingly chosen title as BEHEN HOGI TERI. Yes, for many, the title might be an objectionable sexist one, but the truth remains that it is a very commonly used phrase by the young school-college going boys referring to the girls living in their close neighborhood or mohallas, known to them since childhood.

Opening without any long introductions or build-ups, the first 30 minutes are the best part of BEHEN HOGI TERI, especially the scenes revolving around the sudden death and cremation of the old grandmother. Post that it still keeps your interest alive till the intermission, but sadly starts slipping soon and then gets lost somewhere in the added subplots of the second half ending in an impressive manner. The entertaining writing dries down quickly as the film progresses further and only Rajkummar Rao, Gulshan Grover and Henry Tangiri (Rao’s friend) manage to save it somehow till the climax. In fact Rao once again proves how he has mastered the art of rising above the unsupportive writing and Gulshan Grover yet again shows how he can dominate the entire film with his powerful entry & that too coming in the second hour of the film post the intermission.

Cinematography and background music strongly help to create the local ambience as required and the supporting cast does it well hugely contributing in its overall positive feel. However the soundtrack doesn’t come up with anything exceptional ruining another R.D. Burman hit “Jaanu Meri Jaan” unnecessarily. Decently directed by debutant Ajay Pannalal, this could easily be another surprise package like FUKREY and the inclusion of jagran sequence indicates that probably the makers too were intentionally trying to create a similar magic.

However neither the writing nor the casting is capable of resulting in any sleeper hit with the biggest problem being Shruti Hassan, who doesn’t look, behave or act like a next door Punjabi girl from any angle. Moreover can’t say whether it’s due to any cosmetic surgery or not but the girl looked much more smart and gorgeous in her early films in comparison to the present ones.

In all, BEHEN HOGI TERI can easily be rated as an average entertainer that certainly could have been a winner with a much more focused writing and a better second half. In the present form, its yet again one of those movies which you are sure going to enjoy watching on a TV Channel a lot more than the expensive multiplex theater.

Rating : 2.5 + 0.5 / 5 (with the additional 0.5 for both Rajkummar Rao and Gulshan Grover for their entertaining performances.)
