As a thriller revolving around an engaging entangle of more than one blackmailers betraying each other, BLACKMAIL begins well but takes a long time getting to its entertaining pace presenting a novel premise. Besides it goes for too many cinematic liberties in terms of various crimes committed including cold blooded murders conveniently sidelining the Police officials.
However one begins enjoying the proceedings post intermission, realizing that it isn’t any logical crime thriller, but an intentional black comedy made with the sole motive of entertaining the selected viewers. So once the logic is forgotten, and the film gets into its fourth gear, the sequences become enjoyable and it successfully manages to deliver as an above average decent entertainer in its second half.
As a focused comic thriller, not getting into any forced plots or songs, BLACKMAIL (directed by Abhinay Deo) comes as a welcome change, but isn’t going to be a satisfying watch for all, targeting a specific section of viewers to be honest. On the other hand, its certainly going to be a treat for the fans of Irrfan Khan in particular, who once again excels in an out of the box role, along with an impressive Arunoday Singh. But the talented Kirti Kulhari and Divya Dutta do not get much to do in the script trying their level best.
So you can go for it just for Irrfan, who simply kills it as the shocked, victim husband or the main Blackmailer.
