Black (2005) / The Miracle Worker (1962) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama)

20 Feb, 2008 | Movies To See Before You Die / Drama

Sadly it’s again an undisclosed adaptation directed by one of the most talked about director in Indian cinema, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Though its an inspired version of “The Miracle Worker”, still its quite different in characterisation and treatment which makes it impressive to a great extent.

Rani Mukherjje as the blind student does a fine job, but Amitabh Bachchan delivers even better as her teacher and later as the old diseased man. The best part is the art direction and background music in the movie complimenting each frame & shot. The film makes you stand with respect as its ends. The top most performance is by the girl child who is fabulous and acts like a complete pro in her art.

The English Black & White original is quite different in treatment and script too. But still it stands intact as the original and moreover is also based on a true living personality. So go for both the movies as two equal masterpieces made by their respective directors. But I once again feel that the Indian film-makers should have accepted it as an adaptation on their own, rather than people pointing it out as an allegation. Interestingly that also may be the reason why it was not sent as an Official Entry for the Oscars, since the original already had won the deserving Golden Lady in its time.
