DEV ANAND - Was the lead hero of a Hollywood Film in 1970. (Did You Know - 40)

07 Nov, 2012 | Did You Know!

The Evil WithinThe sincere, die-hard fans of the “Evergreen Dev Anand” might know about this rare fact but for many young friends here, it should be a fascinating trivia that the one & only Dev Saab also featured in an American film along with Zeenat Aman and Kieu Chinh, a leading lady from Vietnem in the year 1970. In fact, Zeenat Aman was signed for "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" (1971), after Dev Saab chose her to feature in this English film as one of his leading ladies. So before the cult movie HRHK, Dev Anand and Zeenat Aman actually appeared together on the screen in this Hollywood venture.

The crime melodrama titled THE EVIL WITHIN was a 20th Century Fox production, produced by Rolf Bayer and Directed by Lamberto V. Avellana. Though the IMDB page states it as a Philippines movie but originally it was an English language film which was later dubbed and released in Philippines. Plus it was also reportedly known as “Passport To Danger” being its alternative title. Interestingly the cinematographer of this Hollywood film was Fali Mistry who was a close associate of Dev Anand in many of his films of those times including GUIDE (1965).
But as an experiment the film didn’t do that well at the box office and therefore coudnt reach millions of Dev Anand fans in India. And due to this very reason it also got lost in the shining cloud of other memorable films featuring the maestro in that Golden Era of Indian Cinema.

Still I strongly wish to see this worth watching experiment from long but am not able to find any source till date. So if any of our friends here can give us some information about its DVD release or any other source to watch it then it would be simply great and I would be highly obliged for this kind gesture.
Cheers!

(Along with this another worth watching film is the English version of Dev Anand's GUIDE which is also not available anywhere at this moment. But I did find this short clip of the film at Youtube (at the following link) which clearly gives you an idea of the whole film made in English simultaneously.)

Very nice information,
Bobby can you tell us any actor other than Devanand who did all his film as a solo hero (in bollywood and hollywood) because we never saw Devanand with any lead hero in his entire career (he did some movies with pran and ashok kumar but not with any leading hero like Dilip kumar, Rajender Kumar, Rajkapoor or any other...........can you tell the reason Why?

Bobby Sing

Hi Amit,
You have got a valid point here and as I can remember you wrote this earlier too.
But we couldn discuss it further as I must have missed out the reply that time so I would love to explain it here.

When in the 70s the new trend of Multi-starrer movies began then Dev Anand was not a big supporter of it and felt uncomfortable in acting in a multi starcast project due to his own personal outlook. And that was also one of the reason why he began making his own projects with himself being there as the Solo hero post the 70s.

However unfortunately most of those films couldnt do well as they were actually pretty weak films in reality.
But that doesnt stop anyone like me to keep loving the one and only Dev Anand as always.

Cheers!

Amit Joshi

Thank you very much for the information.........so the multistarrer trend started after 70\'s........I didn\'t notice :)

Regards,
Amit Joshi

Bobby Sing

Yeah Amit, The trend actually started post B.R.Chopra's produced and Yash Chopra directed film WAQT which came in 1965. And then its success lead to more such projects in the 70s.

Cheers!
