Disha (1990) - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

Sai Pranjpe, one of the front runners of "Art Movies Wave" of the 80s is popularly more remembered for her light comic films such as "Chashm-e-Buddoor" and "Katha" than her sensitive ones such as "Sparsh" or "Disha". In 1990 she directed this lesser known masterpiece based on the still burning topic of unemployment and choice of careers made by the youngsters who migrate to cities to earn their livelihood. "Disha" as indicated by its name is a brilliant film made on this relevant subject having a specific message for the society which deserves to be seen especially by the younger generation.

The story is about how two friends start their careers with exactly parallel motives and visions. But as time passes by, their circumstances force them to jump on to each other’s paths unknowingly. After a while, both the friends start living the kind of life they simply hated a few months back but remain helpless. Nana Patekar and Raghuvir Yadav play the two lead characters in the movie and it is infact one the most under rated movie featuring both these masters of their art. Undoubtedly should be included in the list of best works by the inimitable Sai Pranjpe too.

The movie may be a little hard to find on Home Video but its quality thought provoking cinema not to be missed and ideally deserves a respectable DVD re-release for all the lovers of meaningful cinema of the 80s.

Directed By Sai Paranjpe
Starring : Shabana Azmi, Om Puri, Nana Patekar, Raghuvir Yadav

Hi Pawan,

Thanks for visiting and writing in. This particular movie was released by CAPTAIN VIDEO, a home video company of Delhi. but I am not sure whether the title is still available in the market or not.

Still if you are in Delhi or any of your friend lives in the city then you can try it from the company's address.

Keep Visiting and Cheers!

Dear Bobby,
Please watch "Massey Sahib".
I think Raghuvir Yadav is exceptional in this movie.
I would like to know your comments about this movie and Raghuvir Yadav in this movie.

Regards,
Sudhanshu

Dear Sudhanshu,
Since we have lived that era of 80s and 90s watching almost every movie passionately even by borrowing money so have seen almost all the films of those times. Moreover films like "Massey Sahib" were Doordarshan movies in those years not finding many viewers taking it as art cinema to be precise.

But I personally love this man and even now excitingly wait for any of his latest cameos in films. Last one I cherished watching of Raghuvir Yadav was CLUB 60. Do watch it if you havent yet.

Regarding MASSEY SAHIB it was a great performance but a complex charcter too with confusing, idiotic negative shades that were actually supposed to be its highlights. And I do rate Raghuvir's performance in it as a great one undoubtedly.

Cheers!
