EZRA (Malayalam/2017) - Decent but inspired horror drama with some novel settings. [TTP (To The Point) Review By Bobby Sing]

Written and directed by Jay K, EZRA (a Hebrew name) features Prithviraj and Priya Anand (Fukrey/English Vinglish fame) in the lead and follows an appealing storyline of a haunted box/trunk bought by a housewife as a beautiful antique piece. The box actually happens to be a dybbuk or dibbuk box, possessed by a spirit, waiting for getting opened since a long time.

Giving more emphasis to its spooky ambience and storyline, EZRA scores the maximum in its presentation and story-telling focusing on Jewish families residing in the county in the past decades. The authentic depiction of Jewish customs and tradition makes a major impact. Plus it technically excels in its noteworthy cinematography and background score keeping you mostly guessing and engrossed.

The exciting sequences coming one after another and praiseworthy acts of the entire cast converts EZRA into a more than decent watch, whereas a few specific scenes might remind you of the famous English horror movies as a clear source of inspiration. Interestingly a particular sequence related with the dog also makes you recall the recent PARI too.

However in reality EZRA borrows its so original looking basic plot from the 2012 American hit THE POSSESSION, also revolving around a similar dybbuk box. Overall an above average Indian Horror film, good for an entertaining one time watch that doesn’t disappoint.
