Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama / Love Theme)

21 Oct, 2013 | Movies To See Before You Die / Love Theme

We have all been into relationships, both good and bad revolving around friendship, love, trust, work or family. And whenever there is an unpleasant sharp turn experienced in those loving relationships, we more or less have a common thought that probably it was better if I had not even met that particular person in life ever. We strongly try to forget, taking him or her out of our teasing memories and never want to think about that one person again in the future at all. Without any doubt, it is always tough (or almost impossible) but we still slowly get adjusted to that unfortunate truth in life and start living with it helplessly without any other choice.

Now just imagine if there is an exclusive, experimental doctor or lab in the town, which provides you the much desired dream service of removing that person & the relation out of your memory cells completely. And after its done, you can go on living your life meeting new people, without even remembering that face or those days quite freely. In other words, if one has faced a recent break-up, then no problem, as he or she can straight go to the lab and get that name deleted from the memory entirely for only a few bucks without any major hassles.

Interestingly this is the basic plot of Michel Gondry’s film called ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and you got to see this out of the box gem for sure, dealing in affairs, break-ups and the life lived after getting those love angles deleted out of the mind, in just one night (along with a surprising, pleasant connection with Hindi Film Music). Though the film follows a bit complicated & may be confusing story progression in its initial 30 minutes. But once you get used to its narrative style, it gives you some rare insights into the hidden value of relationships we choose to quit, in some weaker moments of life, only to regret later. It has a brilliant idea presented in a complex yet convincing manner, pointing towards an enlightening thought that probably everybody needs to be given a deserving second chance in our loving relationships.

Ending on an open note, the film has two unique acts by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, playing the mad love buds caught in the trap of this newly found technology, who later admit the mistakes they had made. Not a big budget venture based on an unusual theme, ESOTSM is certainly one of those futuristic movies which make you think about the immense possibilities of the future and the worthlessness of them too working against the natural course of living, as it should be. And for that it rightly got an OSCAR for the Best Writing, Original Screenplay in the year 2005.
