We, as viewers, made the catchy but tastelessly written song of R…RAJKUMAR a big hit. So here is the actual visual version of the GANDII BAAT purposefully conceived by the production house already known for its controversial content and projects, using the inviting title.
Promoted as differently tempting web-series, this is Ekta Kapoor’s latest venture as a 10-episode compilation of stories representing the rural regions and the hidden dark desires of the people, intentionally focusing on the woman in particular.
As an official introduction to the series, the makers state,
“Relationships over time, have become complicated or maybe they were never that simple as they seem. Gandii Baat unravels such complexed relationships, closet issues, shocking truths, bizarre myths and unexplored space of men and women through a series of thrilling and exciting stories from the rural part of India.
In these stories you will see how people from rural India are deeply affected by their dark fantasies. And it's not just men, but even rural women going to any extent - including heinous crimes as well!”
Now with that kind of explanation they paint a completely different picture of the rural India aiming their own purpose of getting some instant eyeballs and subscriptions as the series cannot be seen without subscribing for the portal.
Plus they intelligently present each and every erotic story with a surprising twist in the end, strongly pointing towards women fighting back and their collective empowerment, perhaps with the purpose of getting saved from being completely ridiculed or thrashed.
Amongst the four episodes released, where the first simply aims at titillating the viewers, the rest come up with a social twist at the end featuring helpless housewives, a concerning mother-in-law, superstitions in the villages, open prostitution, an old husband and a lonely daughter making a decisive move in the climax asking for the viewer’s sympathy.
To be honest, the series has some content, but the way both Ekta Kapoor and her director Sachin Mohite decide to present it as a B-C grade sleaze, takes away all the credit, further contributing to the already scary state of the social networks corrupting the young minds with a lot of similar appalling stuff.
The series is strictly for the viewers above 18 years of age and can only be watched post a payment (except JIO users). But its various trailers are easily available at Youtube and there is no restriction to watch them by anyone of any age, especially on the mobile phones, widely seen in the hands of kids and the teenagers.
In another of her social network statement Ekta said, “It’s our very own BLACK MIRROR”, referring to the popular British Science Fiction anthology TV series, which tries to give a futuristic account of the probable modern society guided by the new technological advancements in a dark, experimental tone.
As an answer to the statement, would strongly like to disagree as this is not even anything close to the highly praised series BLACK MIRROR at all. Just showcasing internet and mobile phones in some episodes cannot be claimed to be something similar to BLACK MIRROR to be straight. Especially when here too, one brings in the same NAGIN kind of mentality corrupting the TV audience of our country showing them the Ichhadaari snakes and more.
As mentioned earlier, the stories have content. But their way of presentation isn’t really interested in the storytelling, with a constant and persistent emphasis on the erotica and the promised skin-show, exposing the female cast.
In other words, the series could have been something entirely different if the makers were not only interested in taking unfair advantage of the censor-free world of internet, catering the same section of viewers it specifically talks about in the chosen stories. On the other hand, it’s quite possible that crude, bizarre, desperate and attention-seeking attempts like these might bring in some kind of censorship on the online content too, provoking and giving adequate reasons to the keen authorities.
Sharing the harsh truth, after watching its youtube trailers, many might feel intrigued to see what exactly is there in this series called GANDII BAAT by paying the online subscription falling in the inviting trap.
As a matter of fact, that’s exactly how such controversial stuff works, reaching its set target audience, working on a perfectly planned strategy by the PR agencies.
