HOTEL MUMBAI (English/Hindi) - A decent attempt coming too late with nothing inventive enough moving beyond the already known. [TTP (To The Point) Review by Bobby Sing]

Based on the horrifying Mumbai terror attacks of 26/11 in 2008, HOTEL MUMBAI has been directed by Australian director Anthony Mars, who narrates it from a different viewpoint of what happened inside the Taj Hotel and how the brave employees saved the life of their reputed guests facing the gunshots.

The director does it well with an eye for detail and an amalgamation of real and fictional characters also work fine supported by praise-worthy performances of both Anupam Kher and Dev Patel. However, what doesn’t work is the ‘all seen before’ feel throughout the film and the release coming too late, when we have already witnessed several other versions of the subject in films, documentaries and detailed news reports. In fact, a lot of sequences and phone conversations between the young terrorists and their masterminds are included exactly as heard in original recordings revealed in documentaries such as TERROR IN MUMBAI and more.

Following the narrative of a disaster movie, HOTEL MUMBAI keeps moving at a good pace and then ends without bringing you onto the edge of your seat and without delivering enough chilling moments making you shiver, imagining the magnitude of those brutal attacks on all innocent people. To be fair, its the execution and strong performances that actually keeps it classy along with few exceptional sequences deserving praises. For instance, the scene where Kher addresses his subordinates knowing about the attack, when one of the young attackers calls his family enquiring whether the promised money reached them or not and Dev Patel’s scenes related with his turban (playing a Sikh) dealt with great understanding and responsibility.

In short, this has been made with all good intensions but the film struggles as it never tries anything inventive to enact the gruesome instance and doesn’t come up with anything new about the attack beyond the already known. Giving you the truth, if you watch the revealing documentaries on the attack, then you will honestly find them more moving and ghastlier in their realistic depiction than the present film.

Still, do watch HOTEL MUMBAI as it gets released online because it does have many worth experiencing sequences conveying some important truths of life valuing the existence of others.

Hi,
Couldn't watch it in theatre. Is it similar to the brilliant RGV - Nana Patekar "Attacks of 26/11?

Bobby Sing

RGV's must watch films showcased all the attacks in totality.
This is only based on Taj Attack and the happenings inside it.
As you must have read in the review, its a good film but thats it and nowhere close to RGV's gem.

Keep Visiting and Writing in.
