Hey Ram (2000) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Historical)

28 Dec, 2007 | Movies To See Before You Die / Historical / BTC Exclusive

I still remember the experience I had coming out of the theater after watching “Hey Ram”. It was a new feeling of contentment as I was not expecting such a movie coming from our own film-makers in India. Only Kamal Hassan could have thought of making this Anti-Gandhian movie with his unique passion and sincerity. A Movie of its own kind, talking about the independence struggle and partition from a completely different angle. I would like to congratulate, Kamal Hassan for even trying it and bringing this enlightening topic in front of the new generation.

For some, who are not known to the real circumstances at the time of Partition, it may be shocking to see Gandhi as a controversial character. But in reality, it is the bitter truth, shown brilliantly in an impartial way, taking no particular sides. The detailed sequences of the planning made by the rebellion group are well written and shot. The competitive set designing takes you into the past effortlessly and you can feel the tension in the city as first hand. Along with Kamal Hassan, the small cameo of Rani Mukherjee keeps lingering in your mind long after the movie finishes. Being a Bengali herself she has done complete justice to her character of a riot victim.

A special mention for the music of maestro musician, Illayaraja. His melodious compositions are complimentary to the theme of the movie. Though some songs could be avoided in the narration, as it’s an intense film, but still you enjoy the selective notes being played along with the tense scenes in the background. Special Effects are also incorporated beautifully in the movie, in a symbolic way. The Riots sequence and the confrontation scene between Kamal Hassan & Shahrukh Khan towards the end, is a real treat to watch.

Though the movie is criticized a lot for its arguable content but as I see it, it is a piece of art, simply not to be missed.

Hi Manish,
From a long time. I had in mind a section to start, not on just patriotic films but on the films made around the subject of partition of the country. So you will soon see it here........and I hope you will like it.

Cheers!
