KUTTRAM 23 (Tamil / 2017) - It simply stuns you with its revelations solving the strange case of murder of three pregnant women. (Review by Bobby Sing)

02 Jan, 2018 | Indian Regional language Gems (Other Than Hindi) / Movie Reviews / 2017 Releases

A powerful crime thriller based on the case of a series of murders of three otherwise well-off pregnant women, KUTTRAM 23 (meaning Crime 23) simply stuns the viewer with its revelations solving the strange case and also exposes a shocking medical scam undertaken by a well-known city hospital and its reputed doctors.

Beginning with the twin murder of a Father in the church and a lady confessing her sin, the film slowly heads towards it ‘shocking plot’ (post the usual romance) and then suddenly has an unexpected twist as the case gets personal with a death happening in the family of the chief investigating officer itself. Probing the connection between the murders of all pregnant women, the officer reaches a renowned hospital and its department of artificial insemination revealing many jaw-dropping dark secrets of our hypocrite society.

Written and directed by Arivazhagan, the film truly forces you the praise its writing in particular, for the way it links up the entire proceedings and for such ruthless as well as disgusting disclosures about the deaths involving the known and affluent families of the city.

Starring Arun Vijay and Mahima Nambiar in the lead along with Vamsi Krishna, Aravind Akash and Thambi Ramaiah in the key supporting roles, KUTTRAM 23 also has an intelligent reason for the number 23 used in the title related with the said medical process. The cinematography and background score aptly contributes in the overall impact of the film but once again the romantic angle and the songs remain deliberately included for the obvious commercial reasons. Plus at times it does lack the emotional depth in certain sequences depicting the trauma personally felt by a childless woman.

In all, its a well-written, engrossing crime thriller shot in style, offering a unique plot pointing towards the ‘noble profession’ now turning into a ‘potential business opportunity’ for many. A recommended watch for the lovers of investigative crime thrillers, KUTTRAM 23 actually makes a solid impact once the secret gets revealed hitting you really hard with something way beyond predictable or sanely imaginable.
