Lagaan (2001) & some similar themes.

“Lagaan” was a very rare and successful attempt by one of the most serious actors of Bollywood, Aamir Khan. Brilliantly directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the movie had a fabulous script enacted by a talented star-cast. And it was indeed a courageous step to make a movie entirely based on a cricket match being played between the poor farmers and their British rulers. What I liked the most about the film was its opening sequence where Aamir saves a deer, from the bullets of British officers hunting in the jungle. The sequence is a pure cinematic gem to watch.

As far as the inspirational part goes, Lagaan is undoubtedly an Original in itself with respect to its unique & innovative treatment. But still there are few movies made on a similar kind of theme and subject.

In “Victory” (1981) too, prisoners play a Football match against their officers with a hidden agenda.

In "Mystery, Alaska!" (1999), the city’s amateur hockey team, joins hands together, forgetting  their mutual differences and accepts a challenge to play against a professional team in order to be a part of a national TV event.

Hindi Cinema’s golden classic “Naya Daur” (1957) also had a similar kind of subject where, Dilip Kumar agrees to race his horse carriage with a modern vehicle in order to safeguard his fellow villager’s interests.

But these are only references of some similar themes, with no indication towards any inspiration in particular. And “Lagaan” still stands tall as a true example of excellence achieved in the modern cinema.
