Choosing a difficult or rather unconventionally controversial subject for his debut project, actor-turned-writer-director Samir Soni delivers a forced crime-thriller, that remains utterly confusing throughout heading towards a disturbing climax, which strangely has no relation with the absurd and unexplainable proceedings shown in the entire film.
As it seems, probably the writer-director only had a one line idea of a shocking climax in his mind related with a broken family and then he purposefully wrote/designed the whole film as a misleading psychological thriller or a shockingly mind-numbing mystery deceiving the audience.
Based on a wafer-thin plot that ideally would have been fine for a short film, THE BIRTHDAY SONG follows a painfully slower pace and takes inspiration from various sources such as the famous GROUNDHOG DAY (repeating the same event). However what hurts the most is when the film simply ends exposing the disturbing truth without giving any explanation for all the earlier weird sequences as some kind of ’over-intelligent’ open ending falling completely flat.
So here the unconvincing and confused writing remains the biggest culprit in the film which otherwise has all average performances (Sanjay Suri, Nora Fatehi, Zenia Starr) and a fine cinematography too along with a good soothing track used in its first half. Besides its really strange why they decided to use such an uninspiring and inapt title for an unusually written film that was intentionally made to brutally shock and disturb its viewers.
In all, this can easily be skipped and can (strictly) only be seen if you are well versed with World Cinema and habitual of such films insanely messing with your mind.
