Mandi - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

Shyam Benegal’s path breaking movie on a brothel with a delightful insight on the life of prostitutes living together in a house. It is one of the most appreciated and talked about movie of Shyam Bengal. The unique & special highlight of this movie is that it features Smita Patil & Shabana Azmi together in powerful roles. Both were considered as the strongest pillars of alternative cinema at that time, but sadly Smita Patil passed away early in her life which was a huge loss for the Indian Film Industry.

Mandi is an interesting film about the relationships prostitutes have with their clients and within themselves. A touching description of their life style makes it a worth watching movie with a different and novel concept. A script which must have been written after intensive research on the topic and it also represents the bitter truths of our society. A must watch for meaningful and art movie lovers. A definite food for your thinking minds.
Directed By Shyam Benegal
Starring : Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Nasseruddin Shah & Om Puri
Music By Vanraj Bhatia

Dear Bobby,

I would love to read more in detail about this film..Very impactful one..this film is! Like light rays reflecting the various cut of the jem ..each frame and characters say something profound..Amazingly influencial..In Tamil Literature..we call this film in Marutham Thinai..the civilized background in which man no longer goes out of the house for survival only but also for power fame prestige and hypocrisy ruling everything..Its a very deep subject and i am looking forward to know more about this film through your views too,,Thank you very much for the recommendation.

Dear Bavani,
This is one film that can easily be adapted for a whole book talking about its various characters individually.
Glad that you liked it a lot and I will try to write about it in details soon.
