Maya Memsaab (1993) & Madam Bovary

The movie proudly finds a place in my “Must See Movies” list due to its rich content and fabulous performances. Directed by Ketan Mehta, the movie is an intelligent piece of work, inspired from the novel “Madame Bovary” penned by Gustave Falubert. It has a brilliant star-cast ensemble, where everyone has given one of the best performances of their careers. “Maya Memsaab” is a National Award Winner movie which also rightly mentions its inspirational source in its opening titles. And that was great to see as a positive change.

In fact there are many more movies made on the same novel in the last decade. The first probably was made in 1933 and last in 1991.

But honestly, I found the Indian version, far better than all the English adaptations which also gave the due recognition to its original source.
