Meet John Doe (1941) / Main Azaad Hoon (1989) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama)

This is another rare example where an Indian version “Main Azaad Hoon” can be rated better than its Original English flick “Meet John Doe” in my opinion, which in other words is an achievement for Indian Cinema. But the credit of its basic idea and the storyline rightly belong to the makers of the Original black & white classic.

“Meet John Doe” was given an innovative treatment by the director and it was really a bold experiment to make such kind of social movie at that time in 1941. But Frank Capra is well known for his socially relevant movies and this is no exception to that. Talking about the hindi version, for me it was more entertaining and leaves a far better & much stronger impact on the viewer.

Amitabh has done a brilliant job as Azaad, well supported by Shabana Azmi as the reporter. “Main Azaad Hun” is undoubtedly the best movie of Tinnu Anand as a director. It also has a brilliant inspirational song, “Kitne Baazu Kitne Sir, Gin Le Dushman Dhyan Se”, which sadly went unnoticed. Though the Indian version excelled in almost all the departments, it still remains an unauthorized version of the original. At least an acknowledgement to the English Producers should have been there. It is suggested to watch both the adaptations of the movie to experience the difference and if possible watch the Indian version first.

Directed By Frank Capra (Eng) / Tinnu Anand (Hindi)

hey.. I loved this movie too & it even inspires me when I am feeling low..
Amitabh has been just superb & so were the whole crew team.. including photography.

My favourite scene is the morning sunrise when all the nearby village folks are coming with the sound of bells in background coming from the bulls bells. I think no other film has been ever made of this calibre..

Hi Maria,
Its very rare in Hindi films that any background score gets released individually and when its a film from the last century then its even more difficult to expect that.
However in that scenario the only possibility is to rip the audio file from the DVD and then you can edit it to get the background score with you as desired.

Keep Visiting,
Cheers!
