Mithya (2008) & similar themes.

Rajat Kapoor has always been involved in films which are innovative, entertaining but also highly inspired from World Cinema. Like “Raghu Romeo” (2003) was inspired from the Spanish movie “Atame” or ”Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down (1990). His movie on a bold subject of wife swapping, “Mixed Doubles” (2006) was very close to “My Best Friends Wife” (2001) and “Bheja Fry” in which he had a key role, was entirely based on a French movie “The Dinner Game”.

Walking down the same road, his new venture “Mithya” is also based on a seen before theme of plotting a person having similar looks in place of a famous don. Firstly the subject is quite similar to our own classic thriller “Don” (1978). And secondly the story is also very close to an Italian movie “Johnny Stecchino” (1991) featuring the actor-director Robert Benigni.  Since I haven’t seen the Italian flick so can’t comment strongly on the second similarity. But with the look of it the theme seems to on the same lines of “Mithya”.
