A novel, intriguing plot in an investigative crime thriller and that too featuring one of the biggest names is nothing short of an exciting news for the true lovers of Indian cinema. OPPAM exactly brings you the same with a premise of a blind lift operator framed for a murder in his building, who both has to prove his innocence and save a kid girl from the killer as her only savior.
Directed by Priyadarshan, based on the story written by Govind Vijayan, OPPAM features Mohanlal as the blind protagonist and his splendid performance becomes the biggest merit of the film which does have its flaws along with a very fine narrative.
It has a shaky start where you find hard to believe Mohanlal is actually blind living with the help of his sharp senses of touch, sound and smell. But the veteran soon wins you over with a brilliant performance covering the other shortcomings of the film especially in its concluding part.
As a well-crafted crime thriller OPPAM has a superb first half with many edge of the seat, tense moments. The writing also brings in the emotional drama related with the kid girl, which does hinder the pace at times moving away from a crime thriller. Plus one also finds some predictable, formulaic moments in its second half hampering the overall progression and impact of the film as a perfect taut thriller. However the performances keep you involved and excited to see the culmination including Baby Meenakshi, Samuthirakani, Anusree, Vimala Raman, Nedumudi Venu and more.
The cinematography, background score and editing provides a great support to the narrative, but its the soundtrack that turns out to be a fine, pleasant surprise having a noticeable range.
In short, OPPAM has a thrilling plot, an engaging narration and a worth appreciating stellar performance by Mohanlal. The film has its share of filmy moments or flaws in a weaker second half, but it still deserves to be seen for its many solid insertions and Mohanlal in particular, for sure.
