Hindi cinema is known for blindly following a trend, and the trend of going for a remake of an original regional language hit has been more visible in the last few decades in particular. No doubt, remakes have always been there in the history of Hindi cinema since the early decades. Plus, it certainly helps when the same director is called in to make a Hindi remake of his regional language hit presenting it with the same vision, changing the basic settings as per the Hindi film audience.
However, what actually remains the most important point in such projects is the choice of which South hit deserves to be remade, why and when? The factor is a crucial one as at times a subject which has a great appeal down south, might not be that relevant to the Hindi film belt and at times it might be outdated with everything already showcased in several Hindi films.
This is in fact the exact reason why PRASTHANAM, the official remake of a Telugu Hit with the same title released back in 2010, doesn’t work at all based on a jaded, clichéd script yet again narrating the overused plot of a political family with a father, two wives, step brothers, a loyal friend, corrupt police officers, rape, murders and the same political rivalry. Apart from cinematic execution of certain sequences the film falls flat even when it has been directed by the same director who made the regional hit.
But then the original film came a decade back in 2010 and this is 2019 with probably the most happening decade our country has witnessed till date in political terms.
So, the only question you have in mind after watching PRASTHANAM, while doing PRASTHAAN (departure) from the theater is that, who suggested Sanjay Dutt to remake a film based on such an outdated subject and why did he decide to remake it in the first place?
Frankly, ever after having a stellar cast the film never finds its rhythm as it has nothing new to offer and then displays all the guts to waste actors like Manisha Koirala and Jackie Shroff in just few scenes. Particularly the way director visualizes Jackie Shroff in long open hair in the initial hour really puts you off and then you never feel in sync with the film right till the very end. Wonder why Sanjay Dutt didn’t even realize how repetitive everything is while enacting it during the shoots?
In all, the only one who manages to give you something to watch in the tediously long film having all rotten content matter is Ali Fazal followed by Chunky Pandey, Satyajeet Dubey and Chahat Khanna who desperately keep trying to somehow stand out from the rest.
Otherwise PRASTHANAM has got noting that can even be tried on an online portal giving it your precious 2+ hours.
