23 Sep, 2008 | Movies To See Before You Die / World Cinema

World acclaimed director Akira Kurosawa’s thought provoking & extra ordinary movie revolving around a rape victim, RASHOMON is considered among the Top 100 movies made all over the world without an exception. And the film surely deserves its respected place in the rating as it both entertains as well as enlightens the viewer about the cunning human mind and its wicked thought process in a splendid manner.
Admittedly, the classic would not be a normal movie watching experience for many as it has its own silent moments and slow proceedings disturbing a few. But if you are really interested in studying it as a text book material on film-making excelling in its various departments, then there is lot to learn and follow demanding some essential repeated viewings by the keen viewers.
The story is woven around a murder and rape case brought for a trial. But the same incident is being reported through the revealing perspective of three different people associated with the shameful episode individually. Each testimony in the court gives a new angle to the story leading to fresh conclusions and the overall impact of various viewpoints presented compels the viewer to re-think about them all more than once. In other words, the new truths unfolded give you an opportunity to see deep into the realms of human psyche and the thoughtful narration slowly takes you in, post the initial build-up beautifully executed by the maestro director.

Simply put, if you can get through its old world feel, slow pace and meaningful silences, looking into each and every character involved in the case introspectively, then watching this Kurosawa Classic is certainly going to be a great learning experience without any slightest of doubt. And the film itself will prove why its widely considered as one of the best and most influential cinematic expressions made all over the world till date…… unanimously.
