In the opening address of my book Did You Know (Vol.1) featuring 51 chapters on some lesser-heard facts about Hindi cinema, I expressed a serious regret. And it was about the lack of books written on the filmmaking styles, strategies, and work structures, followed by veteran filmmakers of our Hindi cinema.

We have got books on different films, their individual study and on the entire repertoire of many renowned directors, written by reputed authors and connoisseurs of Hindi films. But rarely has there been a book talking about how they used to write their films, conceive/visualize the shots, capture it to perfection and then polish it on the editing table working with their chosen creative team. In other words, books written on their undisclosed filmmaking style and work structure, either penned by the directors themselves or by their main assistant directors/associates, revealing their thought process are sadly not there in our literature based on Hindi cinema.

Thankfully, some thoughtful mind gave the immensely valuable idea to veteran director Rahul Rawail to write a book, not on his own films, but on the experience of working with the showman Raj Kapoor as his assistant director. Following the brilliant idea, Rahul worked with Pranika Sharma and the result is Raj Kapoor: The Master at work–a compilation of his memoirs going back to his days spent with Raj, the Kapoors, their films and the R.K. Studios.

Its probably the first, rare book of its kind penned by a director, not focusing on his films but on the working structure of his master and his years of learning as an assitant to his mentor in the field.

The books got released on the showman’s birth anniversary on 14th December 2021 in New Delhi by the honourable Vice-President of India and both Ranbir Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor were part of the panel discussion on stage with Rahul Rawail and Suhel Seth.
