When I first came to know about the link between one of my favourite movies “Sharaabi” and the English Flick “Arthur”, then I was pretty shocked and also convinced that “Sharaabi” cannot be an inspired movie from any angle. The Amitabh Bachchan starrer had so many emotional values associated with it that it was hard to believe that it could be a copied movie at all.
But sadly as I saw “Arthur”, all my misconceptions got shattered and I realized that “Sharaabi” was indeed heavily inspired from the English Hit directed by Steve Gordon, featuring Dudley Moore in the lead. And further it was rather more disheartening to see that even the best character of “Sharaabi” – the Munshi Ji, was also entirely taken from the English (OSCAR Award Winner) Original, as it is, adding more Indian Sentimental values into it as a flavour.
Having said that, I would also like to admit that despite of its sad inspired status, “Sharaabi” still remains one of the most intelligently made movies based on any foreign flick. And for that director Prakash Mehra indeed deserves all the praises. Especially for the use of Urdu Shayri in its highly emotional sequences and the entertaining way of depicting various loving relationships of a rich lonely drunkard man.
Also, its brilliant performances lead by Amitabh Bachchan and Om Prakash along with its HIT melodious music by Bappi Lahiri, forcibly justifies the Cult Status enjoyed by the film till date. But I sincerely wish it was an original effort of the team or at least they could have acknowledged the REAL Source from where it was all borrowed.
