Shatranj Ke Khiladi - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

Based on a story by one of the most respected writers in India, Premchand, the movie is about two friends who are just crazy for playing chess and can sacrifice simply anything to keep hooked on to their game. The master filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s only hindi movie with Sanjeev Kumar and Sayed Jaffery playing the lead characters of Chess Players.
 
A brilliantly directed movie well supported by Shabana Azmi, Farukh Sheikh, Amjad Khan, Farida Jalal and more. Among the best sequences of the movie is the one where both the players have to leave a game, just started, due to the sudden death of a person in the house. And another, when Sayeed Jaffery finds a man hiding under the bed of his wife, in his own house. Remarkably shot by Satyajit Ray in a unique and highly enjoyable style, the movie is not at all boring as it seems from its subject. In fact it’s quite difficult to choose this kind of story for a movie project and only Satyajit Ray could have done it with such an excellence. A pure cinematic gem, for the thinking viewers.
