Some Like It Hot (1959) (Movies To See Before You Die - Comedy)

29 Aug, 2012 | Movies To See Before You Die / Comedy

Popularly remembered and loved all over the world for its great comedy, performances and direction, SOME LIKE IT HOT is considered as one of the Greatest American Comedy of all times by the American Film Institute and many other reputed critics. Nominated in 6 categories in the Academy Awards, the film also won an OSCAR for Best Costume Design and the reason for this recognition was right there in its hilarious plot which had two male actors dressed as young ladies for the major part of the film.

Directed by the maestro Billy Wilder, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and George Raft in the key roles, the film has a great script with many entertaining & funny sequences coming one after another to keep you glued to the screen throughout. Though, it actually starts with a crime-thriller kind of sequence where the two boys accidentally witness a gang-war killing and then run away from there. But just after 20 minutes of its proceedings, it gets transformed into a funny one, once the boys get into their girly getups and then start shifting between their dual personalities perfectly.

Having a completely balanced script, it lovingly features the friendly romance between Curtis & Marilyn, as well as the humorous attempted affair between Lemmon and Joe E. Brown flirting with each other. And with all its lead actors performing their characters splendidly the film becomes a great enjoyable journey right till the end when the gangsters unexpectedly reach the same place where everyone is staying. But here another important point praising the movie is that despite of revolving around a plot which had enough space for sex and vulgarity, the director Billy Wider keeps it pretty clean and decently entertaining without going into that avoidable zone of being offensive. In few words, SOME LIKE IT HOT is certainly one of those top 3 movies dealing in mistaken identities where the well known male characters remain in female getups for a major part of the film and still successfully entertain the viewers without being vulgar.

Due to its huge success and popularity, the basic plot of the film was also adapted in Hindi Cinema by director Narendra Bedi in his RAFOO CHAKKAR made in 1975. The film had Rishi Kapoor & Paintal playing the boys dressed as girls and Neetu Singh as Rishi’s lady love. So if you enjoyed watching Rafoo Chakkar then you will surely love watching SOME LIKE IT HOT  too as it does have the qualities to be called A Complete Classic Entertainer of all times.

Directed by Billy Wilder
Starring : Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, George Raft and more.

Few suggestions if you don\'t mind:
1. Why is there no JAMES CAMERON film in the \'Movies To See Before You Die\' section?
2.The science fiction genre should be separate and not integrated with adventure genre , Hollywood does NOT do that. there films are called sci fi action films/sci fi horror films/ or even sci fi comedy. SCI FI IS THE PRIMARY GENRE of such films not secondary. unlike the action-adventure genre.
3. films like Bladerunner , Aliens and Terminator are examples and should be there I think?
4. No action genre? any reason for that? Rocky ,First blood (Stallone) + our very own Amitabh films like Don do deserve that tag \'Movies To See Before You Die\' don\'t they?
5.Indiana Jones franchise seems to be notable absentee here.
6. I mention these films because you have listed many famous films and even films like Bean , here it is universally acknowledged that the TV series was infinitely better than the film.
7.did I miss the western films in that section as well? are they mentioned anywhere? that is also a separate genre in itself.

Hi Chris,
Here are my honest answers to your suggestions :

1. Why is there no JAMES CAMERON film in the 'Movies To See Before You Die' section?
--- Thats because I dont add people or directors in my list but movies made by them which have to impress me ir-respective of their market or creative status.....So if I love a director then it doesnt mean that I would go on adding all his films in the list unconditionally........Moreover the reason Why I am not a big fan of JC like the whole world, lies in my next point only

(However I just found that I had missed TITANIC in my list, so I would love to include that soon, so thanks for reminding it.)

2. The science fiction genre should be separate and not integrated with adventure genre , Hollwood does NOT do that. there films are called sci fi action films/sci fi horror films/ or even sci fi comedy. SCI FI IS THE PRIMARY GENRE of such films not secondary. unlike the action-adventure genre.

3. Films like Bladerunner , Aliens and Terminator are examples and should be there I think?

4. No action genre? any reason for that? Rocky ,First blood (Stallone) + our very own Amitabh films like Don do deserve that tag 'Movies To See Before You Die' don't they?

---- Hollywood is free to rank its movie as they like but I dont have to follow them to make my list frankly.......and truly speaking i have got the least interest for Technology driven (or based) and Science Fictions unless they have something extrordinary to give back related to LIFE itself or they are great entertainers as the few added in my list like DISTRICT 9 and more..........

CINEMA for me is not only using technology to impress the viewer......So for me Science Fictions, Techno projects or films majorly relying on these mechanical factors dont count much ever. Hence I have included all such films under Adventure genre only.

Similarly the ACTION films should also have something to give to the audience beyond just well executed Action in them to be there in the list as mentioned above.

But I have few Indian films like DON in my pending list, so I would add them soon.

5.Indiana Jones franchise seems to be notable absentee here.
---- Yes I would love to include the best one or may be all of Indiana Jones movies but for that I will have to see them again since I saw them almost more than a decade back.

6. I mention these films because you have listed many famous films and even films like Bean , here it is universally acknowledged that the TV series was infinitely better than the film.
---- Here again if you have read that short write-up then you must have noticed that I have clearly mentioned that Apart from the hugely popular serial these are the 3 other good films made on the character Mr.Bean........So the purpose is to let the reader know that there are FILMS also made on this lovable character with the same splendid actor.......(and I would soon add the new one too...Mr Bean on Holiday)

7.did I miss the western films in that section as well? are they mentioned anywhere? that is also a separate genre in itself.
---- No you didnt miss as they are not there because I am not really very fond of them unless they give me something extraordinary.....and yes I dont take them as a separate genre too....

Lastly I would like to mention Chris that this is my personal list and is therefore subjective which is bound to have many misses and additions which you might or might not approve from your side.........So, its quite possible that if the whole world falls in love with a movie, you may not find it there in my list as I did not love it in the same way.....like many big movies such as AVATAR.....Hence please study the list with that angle and Keep Enjoying!

With thanks for your detailed suggestions.
Cheers!
HIS BLESSINGS
