The inspirational link between "Johar Mehmood In Hong Kong" (1971), "Khel" (1992), "Bedtime Story" (1964) and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (1988).

Johar Mehmood and HollywoodHindi Film Industry’s two famous comedians I. S. Johar and Mehmood played rival conmen in “Johar Mehmood In Hongkong” who try to rob a rich girl by posing as a doctor and a patient. In order to win over each other in doing the task first, they go through various sequences involving the doctor (I. S. Johar) torturing the patient (Mehmood) in many hilarious ways. The film was released in 1971 and still remains a favourite among the fans of Bollywood Comedies, I. S. Johar and Mehmood in particular.

After almost two decades, the same act was repeated by Anil Kapoor and Anupam Kher in Rakesh Roshan’s “Khel” released in 1992 wherein Anupam played the doctor and Anil posed as the patient trying to rob Mala Sinha, a rich lonely lady in exactly similar manner.

Further, in 1994 another comedy film, which is now considered to be one of the best comedies of Bollywood, again copied this very scene in its script and it was "Andaz Apna Apna" featuring Aamir Khan and Salman Khan as the two loving competitors.

But sadly, all these movies were not based on an original plot and they took it all from the English Classic “Bedtime Story” released in 1964 featuring Marlon Brando and Davind Niven in the lead roles of two competing con-men.

Interestingly this movie was also re-made as “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” after more than two decades in 1988 which featured Steve Martin and Michael Caine in the key roles.

But the best part of this whole link-up is that though based on similar plots and having the same comic sequences in all, yet more or less, all these movies remain immensely watchable, enjoyable and hilarious in their own unique ways (with Rakehs Roshan’s Khel at the last step of the ladder). So for all the students of cinema, apart from studying the inspirational story in these links, this can be a perfect example of analyzing that how different directors and actors can add their own USPs in different projects based on the same script.

Hence it should be a visual treat for movie freaks like myself, to watch all these four films alternatively and then see the difference in the cinematic vision of exploiting the same plot in each one of them distinctively.

Would love to have your valuable comments on the same!
Cheers!

UPDATE : Interestingly another Hindi movie released in 2011 directed by David Dhawan titled RASCALS also used the same elements as mentioned above but in much absurd manner.

Why is \'khel\' bad? the lead pair was a hit,and actors were fine (I recall a joke that Boney should have produced these Anil\'s movies which didn\'t work)
I thought it was better than Roshan\'s later films like \'koyla\', \'King uncle\' .and apparently Mala Sinha\'s last film.
That \'wheelchair\' song is also underrated.

Dear Chris,

If you have read the article properly, then its clearly written so "In compartive to all the other three films" - So if you havent seen the other three, you cannot have the right picture....

And regarding the song "Soone Shaam Savere" is one of my favourite songs.

Cheers!

in ANDAAZ APNA APNA there is a sequence that reminds me the same situation.
i cant remember who is the doctor and patient(sallu or amir) but they try to woo the heroine by doing stupid things
