Kiara Advani in LUST STORIES (2018/Netflix) and THE UGLY TRUTH (2009)

Five years post BOMBAY TALKIES (2013) celebrating the centenary of Indian Cinema, directors Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee and Karan Johar return together with a Netflix original film LUST STORIES (made on a similar format) with four different stories/sections directed by them individually. The film has all exceptional performances featuring Radhika Apte, Bhumi  Pednekar, Manisha Koirala, Kiara Advani and Neha Dhupia.

However the section truly representing the title is the one directed by Karan Johar focusing on Kiara Advani as a newly-wed, unsatisfied girl, waiting for her husband to realize the same and perform better in bed.

A particular scene in the story shows Kiara trying a vibrator and accidently its controller gets into the hands of the grandmother, who wrongly assumes it to be the TV remote. She repeatedly presses its button increasing the power, which results in a hilarious, well executed situation right in front of the other family members including the husband.

Interestingly an exactly similar sequence is there in the English romantic comedy THE UGLY TRUTH (2009) too, starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler in the lead. The scene has Katherine (somehow) trying a similar device during an official dinner in a restaurant. A kid sitting at a table next to them accidently finds its remote controller device (that falls out of Katherine’s bag) and starts playing with it pressing the power buttons, creating an embarrassing situation for everyone in the group and others dining in the restaurant.

Here though Karan has beautifully directed his individual section in the film (written and enacted really well), but may be THE UGLY TRUTH scene was the inspiration behind it all as it strongly seems.

Incidentally THE UGLY TRUTH can also be seen at Netflix online portal along LUST STORIES.

(Note : Strangely LUST STORIES rating at Netflix says 13+, but the film has strong mature content and should strictly be considered as ‘Only For Adults’ practicing a self-censorship while opting for it.)
