MILAN TALKIES - Sad to see such a repetitive and unimpressive film made by Tigmanshu Dhulia. (Review By Bobby Sing)

The two names I was more excited for in MILAN TALKIES were of writer-director Tigmanshu Dhulia, whose two films are already there in the Movies To See Before You Die list at BTC and Shraddha Srinath making her debut in Hindi films, whom I truly loved in worth watching movies such as U-TURN (Kannada) and VIKRAM VEDHA (Tamil). Moreover a Tigmanshu Dhulia film made around the mad craze for Hindi films, with actors such as Ashutosh Rana, Sanjay Mishra and Ali Faizal further added to the excitement to many folds.

However while watching it, all the excitement I had was over in the first 30 minutes itself as it never seemed to be a project directed by the man behind films such as HAASIL, CHARAS, PAAN SINGH TOMAR, SHAGIRD, SAHIB BIWI AUR GANGSTER, SAHIB BIWI AUR GANGSTER RETURNS and RAAG DESH. Interestingly three of his last releases never looked like the films Dhulia was once known for but his worst still remains SAHIB BIWI AUR GANGSTER 3 to be honest with the latest MILAN TALKIES at least giving you something to watch in terms of a likable filmy theme and characters.

So what marginally works in MILAN TALKIES is its love and passion shown for Hindi films, the backdrop of a local single screen theater and its projection room (surely inspired from the Italian classic CINEMA PARADISO), Ali Faizal & Rajeev Gupta’s earnest performances and Shraddha Srinath's charming, impressive act in her first Hindi film. Besides, a few songs also grab your attention with the lesser heard voices of Sukhwinder Singh and Sonu Nigam, but still without any specific track to take back home.

On the other hand what literally fails resulting in an unexpectedly clichéd/repetitive or a poor tedious watch is its scattered screenplay and direction that offers nothing fresh as subject, putting in too many side-tracks in its 140 minutes of duration. Plus what can be said about the vision that dares to waste names such as Ashutosh Rana and Sanjay Mishra in a film also featuring the director himself playing an over-the-top role of funky father in love with Hindi films as a wannabe actor.

The film begins introducing the lead character making a sharp comment over the Anti-Romeo squads in UP (as recently done in LUKKA CHHUPI) but then moves in various directions with the same seen before story progression of a typical small town love story dealing with caste-clashes. Can’t say what happens to directors like Tigmanshu Dhulia post a decade or so after showing such promise in their early splendid work and don’t know how such routine projects without any novel twist get approved by the producers or production houses?

Therefore just avoid watching it in the theaters and try it if you must as it gets released on the online portal.
