A loving small town couple, supported by interesting supporting characters with witty one liners and funny sequences coming one after another is the basic format of many recent films made in a controlled budget. PATI PATNI AUR WOH is just another average movie in that league, made for a certain section of viewers who can see anything and everything presented as a light hearted comedy revolving around the small town families.
Forcibly focusing on comic sequences and funny dialogues right from the start, the film has a calm first half progressing on the typical format and then it goes back to the same confusion ridden climax that manages to deliver some entertaining moments as a saving grace. A continuous use of formulaic background score keeps annoying whereas the execution keeps reminding you of many similar films based on the theme featuring Govinda, Anil Kapoor and more.
Supposed to be an official remake of B R Chopra's Pati Patni Aur Woh released in 1978, its more like a new age sequel instead of a remake, as it completely changes the basic structure of the story and its key characterization, which certainly ruins the original, well-executed social drama present in a comic manner. There is no soul or depth in the characters emoting on screen and a few are thrown in just to create the entertaining confusion in the end.
As a director Mudassar Aziz doesn’t try anything fresh or different moving ahead of his earlier films and the same can be said about Kartik Aaryan repeating all the seen before histrionics. On the other hand, where Aparshakti Khurrana looks like imitating Ayushmaan, both Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Panday bring in the much required relief moments saving the film from becoming a below average drama.
In short, it isn’t a bad film but isn’t any superfine film either just like the last few similar movies released following the typical format. So if you easily get satisfied from just average films then the choice is all yours, otherwise I will recommend to watch it on the online portals soon and skip it in the theaters.
For friends who havent seen the original, I hope you do that at the earliest and see how the original was a bold and courageous film made way back in 1978 featuring the one and only Sanjeev Kumar.
