Velle didn’t create any buzz with its unexciting trailer but still, the presence of Abhay and Karan Deol together kept the expectations alive. Surprisingly, the film doesn’t turn out to be anything close to an entertaining watch, despite having an interesting premise and a couple of pleasant songs in the soundtrack (again using Punjabi phrases).
Directed by Deven Munjan, Velle is an official remake of the Telugu film Brochevaruevarura, which was well received by the audience released in 2019. Following the exact story progression of the original, it begins with the introduction of three parallel plots that later get merged in the second half. Sadly, the excitement felt while watching the original goes missing in the adaptation that simply gets lost in the translation.
The Hindi version begins at a confusing note and the abrupt edit-cuts keep disturbing the flow that never comes on track in a completely disjointed film. While the three goons and Abhay-Mouni Roy scenes are decent, the school sequences featuring the three young actors remain the weakest, resulting in a lacklustre first half. An interesting twist gets revealed at the intermission point, but the film never picks up in the second half too and the blame has to be given to its below average direction, jumbled editing, and many continuity jumps.
As expected, the best part of the film remains the acts of the two Deols and Mouni, along with the noteworthy performance of Anya Singh. Savant Singh Premi and Visshesh Tiwari are just fine as the two friends, while the rest don’t come up with anything worth mentioning. In his second film, Karan Deol puts up a better show, especially post intermission, and he always has sincerity in his expressions, even in the comic scenes. But there is still a long way to go and he certainly can deliver, if given an apt project.
Based on a script of interconnecting events, Velle demanded an engaging flow to keep the viewers involved, which is never there in the film, even when it religiously keeps following the original. The background score fails to generate the thrill and the execution and editing do not maintain the tempo required by the theme. As a result, one rarely feels connected, desperately waiting for something entertaining to happen on screen.
Overall, Velle is a lifeless comic drama and can only be seen for Karan, Abhay, and Mouni for their specific scenes. However, the Deols surely deserve much better than this by all means.
