Woh Kehte Hain Humse (DARIYA DIL) - A song written by Vitthalbhai Patel and composed by Raj Kapoor. (Articles on Cinema By Bobby Sing)

Towards the late ‘80s, when the original soundtracks used to release months before the film coming in the theaters, DARIYA DIL (1988) directed by K. Ravishankar became famous due to a single track in the album as “Woh Kehte Hain Humse Abhi Umar Nahin Hai Pyar Ki”.

The film starring Govinda, Kimi Katkar, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Roshni, Raj Kiran and more completely owed its moderate success to this one song alone. However later it also gained millions of hits or views in the internet era for it’s another track “Tu Mera Superman, Main Teri Lady” in which Govinda wore the costume of the Superman and Kimi wore the outfit of a Spiderman (also used in the films's main poster).

One of the typical emotional family drams of the 80s with dialogues written by Kadar Khan, DARIYA DIL is still largely remembered for its hit melodious track “Woh Kehte Hain Humse” soulfully sung by Nitin Mukesh, but the song was in reality neither composed by Rajesh Roshan nor written by Indivar as mentioned in its initial lot of cassettes and LPs released by Venus.

The particular song was actually penned by renowned poet-politician-social worker Vitthalbhai Patel and it was originally written for Raj Kapoor’s film BOBBY representing the teenage love story with the words saying,

“Woh Kehte Hain Humse, Abhi Umar Nahin Hai Pyar Ki,
Naadaan Hain Woh Kya Jaane, Kab Kali Khili Bahaar Ki”

Vitthalbhai Patel began his career as lyricist with BOBBY introduced by Raj Kapoor and wrote two songs in the film, “Na Chahun Sona Chandi” and the hugely famous “Jhooth Boley Kuava Kaatey” as credited in the film’s LP. The third song “Woh Kehte Hain Humse” perfectly suited the theme of the film, but it couldn’t be recorded and finalized for some unknown reasons.

But then, the most interesting part of the backstage story remains that the composition we later got to hear in the recorded song was actually made by Raj Kapoor and the fact has been revealed by Vitthalbhai Patel himself in one of his TV interview.

Beginning the interview, humbly accepting Indivar as a greater poet than himself, Vitthalbhai reveals that he was too stunned to hear the song playing on the radio and credited to Rajesh Roshan (as composer) and Indivar (as lyricist).

The lyrics were actually given to Raj Kapoor for his film BOBBY by himself and it was Kapoor only who composed the tune of the opening verses too as he was known to have a highly blessed musical sense along with his other proven expertise in filmmaking and writing. The tune was sung by Raj Kapoor in a close gathering with Laxmikant Pyarelal (in their place) along with Vitthalbhai Patel and a few others including Rajesh Roshan who was then working with the famous composer duo as their assistant. They all together heard the tune sung by Raj Kapoor which later couldn’t be included in the film’s soundtrack, but remained with the director (in his mind) as he was known and loved to use such gems even decades after their original creation in his later films.

After more than 15 years, the track was all of a sudden recorded by Rajesh Roshan with the same lyrics, which Vitthalbhai Patel heard playing on a radio. Hearing the song, he immediately called up Raj Kapoor and they both expressed their disappointment over the unexpected disclosure. As revealed by Patel, he then sent legal notices to the team behind the making and they all came to Bhopal apologizing for the big goof-up. The team then offered a cheque of Rs.11,000/- to Patel in front of the press with an assurance that from now onwards all records and cassettes will have the name of the original lyricist printed mentioning the particular song.

Dariya Dil Song CreditsVitthalbhai Patel didn’t take the cheque and asked them to give it to some charitable organization, but post the instance all the records and cassettes did have his name printed in a different colour (as seen in the picture shared), though Raj Kapoor’s contribution in the creation remained uncredited.

Coming to the most amazing part of the write-up, thankfully we can today hear Raj Kapoor singing this song in a rare audio clip shared by Sanjay Bhai Vitthalbhai Patel (the veteran’s son) in his Youtube channel at the link given below and its really amazing to hear Raj Kapoor singing the verses more than 15 years before it was unofficially recorded by Rajesh Roshan.

Interestingly, despite being a close associate and friend of RK films, though Mukesh could not have sung the song in BOBBY as the film required a new, fresh and young voice, it was destined to get recorded in his son’s voice more than a decade later by Nitin Mukesh.

As a matter of fact, this also reminds me of another similar case of the song in film MOHRA - "Na Kajre Ki Dhaar" (also included in my book DID YOU KNOW Vol.1), which was originally recorded by Mukesh composed by Kalyanji Anandji. The song which couldn’t be used in any film’s soundtrack for some unknown reasons was later re-recorded in the voice of Pankaj Udhas by their son Viju Shah in the early 90s for the film MOHRA. But that was of course all legitimately done and was not the case of any unofficial lift without informing the original creators. The MOHRA song was also incidentally penned by Indivar.
