It is always pleasantly surprising and appreciable if a launch pad of a youngster coming from a filmy family isn’t the usual romantic-musical drama displaying some guts. And that’s the key reason YEH SAALI AASHIQUI deserves praises along with some additional accolades as Vardhan Puri (grandson of Amrish Puri) introduces himself both as an actor and a writer, co-writing this nasty thriller instead of any love saga.
Beginning with the usual romance YEH SAALI AASHIQUI quickly starts throwing some unexpected shockers and then turns into an intense bloody revenge thriller in its second half giving enough chances to the lead pair to showcase their acting skills.
Unfortunately, though both Vardhan Puri & Shivaleeka Oberoi try hard to prove their abilities displaying a wide range of emotions, their immaturity shows, which in entirety does hamper the impact along with the flawed writing. On the other hand, the background score helps but songs yet again prove to be a big demerit.
The romantic thriller has been written leaving big loopholes in the story progression especially in the second half and the sequences related with the mental asylum. Moreover the basic plot seems to be original only till you recall that it’s actually the gender reversed script highly inspired from another famous crime thriller made by a critically acclaimed writer-director.

Would like you to guess the similar film and as a hint just think about two recently met lovers X & Y, wherein X betrays Y leading Y to the jail. And then Y returns back to take a deadly revenge from X redefining betrayal and vengeance. The famous thriller was not any big success but is now widely accepted as a well-made film, ironically also said to be inspired from a Sidney Sheldon novel.
In short, YEH SAALI AASHIQUI is a courageous and appreciable attempt. But as a crime thriller it has been casually written making everything too convenient for the lead character, which also makes the execution/direction by Cherag Ruparel look clumsy and lacking in craft. Despite the lenght it does manage to keep you engrossed due to its continuous twist and turns but I wish it was a well-made project benefitting the entire team. May be they will come up with a much better and taut movie in their second attempt.

(Note : If you couldn’t guess the inspiration, though its title reminds you of Sudhir Mishra’s YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, the film actually has a similar subject with genders reversed as seen in EK HASINA THI (2004) directed by Sriram Raghavan.)
