GOODACHARI (Telugu/2018) – A smart, engrossing spy thriller with many impressive twists that work despite the cinematic liberties. (Review by Bobby Sing)

As an Indian spy thriller in Telugu introducing a secret agent numbered 116, GOODACHARI (meaning Spy) goes much ahead of the recent spy movies seen in Hindi cinema both in terms of content, suspense and presentation with an impressive culmination.

Directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka, it is based on some smart writing that starts placing the dots right from the beginning itself and then slowly connects them together building a fine and entertaining suspense. The drama becomes more engrossing as it moves ahead at a brisk pace introducing new interesting characters and then the revelation hits you hard being completely unpredictable. Cinematography, production design, action, background score and editing contribute immensely in the film’s fine build-up, but what really works is the emotional twist in the storyline revealed towards the surprising finale. Both Adivi Sesh and Prakash Raj do complete justice to their roles as the two key characters and the supporting cast performs fine with a few being just okay.

However the one condition of enjoying this well-made spy thriller is to ignore or accept the filmy insertions in it as huge cinematic liberties taken like a typical masala movie. Along with many brilliantly conceived sequences it also has a few where you will wonder how come the hero came out free or unhurt just like that (like a superhero), for instance the airport chase and escape sequence.

So though the film defies logical reasoning at times, its entertaining suspense element certainly works along with the performances and the fast paced story progression with enough twists and turns keeps you invested throughout. Moreover the touching as well as unexpected emotional angle inserted towards the end connects well, which further enhances its overall impact on the viewers.

Hence do go for it, as GOODACHARI is unarguably far better than what you have recently seen and appreciated as supposedly spy movies made in Hindi cinema and the film was a sleeper Hit too in its specific region.
