IMAIKKAA NODIGAL (Tamil/2018) - Both Nayanthara and Anurag Kashyap shine in this engrossing serial killer thriller. (Review By Bobby Sing)

What we have been missing in our cinema, particularly Hindi cinema since last many years (or last couple of decades) is a great, scary villain providing the much required lift to a crime drama. Certainly that remains the major reason why our heroes too don’t emerge as the heroes we have been witnessing in the last century fighting with the mighty villains.

Thankfully IMAIKKAA NODIGAL brings us back The Villain in a serial killer film, which has been superbly played by the renowned writer-director Anurag Kashyap making his debut in Tamil movies. But if that is not enough to go for it at the earliest, then here we also have the beautiful Nayanthara as a tough and clever CBI officer assigned the job of catching Rudra - the serial killer, before it’s too late. And the lady simply kills it as the cop, giving a tough competition to Anurag.

Who is the real villain in terms of morality - forms the crux of this well-conceived crime mystery penned by Pattukkottai Prabakar and directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, who  brilliantly executes it on the screen as an edge of the seat thriller with many timely twists. Keeping the focus on the villain throughout, the screenplay cleverly builds up a crescendo revealing the unexpected mystery behind the serial killing. And an effective background score along with an efficient camerawork takes it to another level especially in the tensed and action sequences.

Wasting no time in introductions it comes to the point from the very first scene itself and then presents the cat and mouse game between the officers and the killer grabbing your complete attention. Interestingly here we have a crucial cameo played by Vijay Sethupathi too in a flashback besides impressive supporting acts by Atharvaa, Raashi and more. Plus even in the duration of just 10 minutes less than three hours, the film never becomes a drag and successfully maintains the interest alive. However what still could have been trimmed are the routine song and dance additions made for the commercial requirements.

Moreover on a personal note, I did find the revelation entirely different as well as a little underwhelming in terms of mystery, but then there still existed some solid reasoning behind Rudra’s individual motive that works.

In short, do watch it for the entertaining cat and mouse game between an incredible villain enacted by Anurag and an equally competent officer played by Nayanthara, who honestly don’t let you think about the flaws in this engrossing serial killer thriller aptly titled IMAIKKAA NODIGAL, literally meaning ‘Blinkless Seconds’.

Rating: 3.5 / 5
